The days that followed were unusually quiet.
Carlo never called.
He never sent flowers.
He never asked Marco to persuade Isabella to return.
Instead, he focused on finding the people who had targeted her.
For the first time in years, he realized protecting Isabella meant more than simply keeping enemies away.
It also meant protecting her heart.
Meanwhile, Isabella slowly adjusted to her new life.
She spent her mornings helping her father expand the family business.
Her evenings were filled with dinner, laughter, and peaceful conversations she hadn't enjoyed in years.
Little by little, the emptiness inside her began to heal.
One afternoon, her father smiled proudly as he handed her a file.
"You've done excellent work these past weeks."
"I'm thinking of putting you in charge of our overseas division."
Isabella looked surprised.
"Me?"
"You've always been capable."
"You simply spent too many years standing behind someone else's success."
Those words stayed with her.
She had sacrificed her own dreams to become the perfect Mafia wife.
Now, for the first time, she had the chance to build something that belonged entirely to her.
At Romano Headquarters, Marco entered Carlo's office carrying another investigation report.
"Boss, we traced the man who ordered the dock accident."
"Where is he?"
"Dead."
"Someone silenced him before we could question him."
Carlo's eyes turned cold.
"The Morettis are cleaning up their own mess."
"There's more," Marco continued.
"We've intercepted messages suggesting they'll target Madam again."
Carlo stood immediately.
"Increase security around her parents' estate."
"Without her noticing."
"Yes, Boss."
That same evening, Isabella attended a charity gala representing her family's company.
It was her first public appearance since leaving Carlo.
The ballroom was filled with influential business leaders.
Many whispered as she entered.
"Isn't that Don Carlo's wife?"
"I heard they're separating."
"She looks happier than before."
Ignoring the gossip, Isabella greeted several investors.
For the first time in years, people recognized her for her own achievements rather than her husband's reputation.
Across the room, an elegant man approached her.
"Miss Isabella, I'm Adrian Morelli."
"I've admired your family's shipping business for years."
"Would you allow me to buy you dinner sometime?"
Isabella smiled politely.
"That's kind of you, but I'm not interested in dating anyone right now."
"I'll gladly discuss business instead."
Adrian laughed.
"Fair enough."
Unbeknownst to them, Carlo had just entered the ballroom.
He wasn't there as her husband.
He had received intelligence that one of the Moretti family's assassins planned to strike during the gala.
The moment he saw another man smiling at Isabella, something twisted painfully inside his chest.
Marco noticed immediately.
"Boss... remember why we're here."
Carlo looked away.
"I know."
Suddenly, the ballroom lights went out.
Women screamed.
Several gunshots echoed through the darkness.
"Everyone get down!" Marco shouted.
Chaos erupted.
Carlo sprinted toward the last place he had seen Isabella standing.
"Bella!"
He found her crouching behind a marble pillar.
"Stay behind me," he ordered.
"I'm not helpless," Isabella replied, picking up a fallen security guard's pistol.
She expertly checked the magazine.
Carlo stared at her.
"I almost forgot... you taught me how to shoot."
"Then don't get in my way," she answered calmly.
An armed assassin appeared from the second floor balcony.
Without hesitation, Isabella fired.
The bullet struck the man's shoulder, forcing him to drop his weapon.
Before he could escape, Romano soldiers surrounded him.
Within minutes, the attack was over.
Police sirens echoed outside the hotel.
The guests were escorted out safely.
Carlo turned toward Isabella.
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Because you were here."
She looked directly into his eyes.
"Don't misunderstand."
"I'm grateful you protected everyone tonight."
"But gratitude isn't forgiveness."
"I know," Carlo replied quietly.
"Then stop looking at me like you expect everything to go back to the way it was."
"Because it won't."
Before leaving, Isabella paused beside him.
"You once asked me to give you time."
"Now I'm asking you to do the same."
"If you truly regret everything... prove it through your actions."
"Not because you want your wife back."
"But because you've finally become the man I deserved from the beginning."
She walked away with her parents.
Carlo watched until her car disappeared into the night.
Marco stepped beside him.
"Boss... do you still think she'll come back?"
Carlo smiled bitterly.
"I don't know anymore."
"For the first time in my life... I understand that love isn't something power can buy."
"If she ever returns... it'll only be because I earned it."
