Three days passed.
My phone remained switched off.
For the first time in nearly ten years...
No calls.
No accusations.
No apologies.
Only peace.
Every morning, I carried fresh daisies to my daughter's grave.
Every evening, I sat beneath the cherry tree until the stars filled the sky.
I finally learned what silence sounded like.
It didn't hurt.
It healed.
Hundreds of miles away...
Evelyn had stopped going to the office.
Her secretary quietly placed another stack of documents on her desk.
"The board is asking you to attend today's meeting."
"Cancel it."
"The investors are waiting."
"I said cancel it."
The secretary hesitated before leaving.
The massive office became silent once more.
Evelyn opened the bottom drawer.
Inside lay dozens of little notes.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Don't skip breakfast.
Good luck on your presentation.
I'll always be cheering for you.
Ryan.
She remembered smiling every time she found one.
Then Marcus appeared.
The notes stopped.
Not because I stopped loving her.
Because I realized she had stopped reading them.
A tear landed on the faded paper.
She quickly wiped it away.
Marcus entered without knocking.
"Evelyn."
She didn't answer.
"I made dinner."
"I'm not hungry."
"You haven't eaten all day."
"I said I'm not hungry."
Marcus sighed.
"Ryan always comes back after he calms down."
Evelyn slowly lifted her head.
"No."
Marcus frowned.
"What?"
"He isn't coming back."
She said it so quietly that even she barely heard herself.
Marcus forced a laugh.
"Don't scare yourself."
"He has nowhere else to go."
Those words struck Evelyn harder than any slap.
Nowhere else to go.
Hadn't she believed the same thing?
That no matter how much pain she caused...
I would always remain.
Her phone suddenly rang.
Future Evelyn.
She answered immediately.
"Did you find him?"
The older woman's breathing was uneven.
[No.]
[Something else disappeared.]
"What?"
[Your phone.]
Evelyn looked down in confusion.
"My phone is right here."
[Not yours.]
[His.]
She didn't understand.
Future Evelyn continued.
[For five years... I could always call Ryan.]
[No matter how badly I treated him... he always answered eventually.]
[Today... his number no longer exists.]
Evelyn's fingers tightened around the device.
"What does that mean?"
Silence.
Then...
[It means... he finally let us go.]
That evening...
I stood before Daisy's grave.
The old phone rested in my hand.
Every photograph of Evelyn.
Deleted.
Every message.
Deleted.
Every recording of her voice.
Deleted.
Finally...
I removed the SIM card.
It snapped cleanly between my fingers.
I buried the broken pieces beneath the cherry tree.
Not out of hatred.
Not out of revenge.
But because I no longer needed to hear the voice of someone who had chosen everyone except her own daughter.
The wind carried the scent of spring across the hillside.
For the first time...
When I closed my eyes...
I couldn't remember Evelyn's voice anymore.
Only Daisy's.
"Daddy..."
"I'll always love you."
I smiled through quiet tears.
"I'll always love you too."
Behind me...
An entire life ended without a single goodbye.
