Chapter 5: The Person He Never Noticed

The days on Wanoki Island passed more peacefully than I had ever imagined.

Every morning, I woke to the sound of waves instead of endless thoughts about Emil McLaren.

There were no expectations waiting for me.

No one compared me to anyone else.

No one looked at me with pity.

For the first time in years, I was simply Penelope Hudson.

Every day at the Ocean Research Center was busy.

I helped organize research reports, welcomed visitors, and assisted the scientists with marine conservation projects.

Although the work was simple, it gave me something I had long forgotten—purpose.

After finishing work one afternoon, I carried several heavy boxes toward the equipment storage room.

Halfway there, one of the boxes slipped from my hands.

"Careful."

A familiar voice spoke before the box could hit the ground.

Strong hands caught it effortlessly.

I looked up.

It was Adrian Hale.

"Thank you," I said.

"I almost dropped everything."

He smiled warmly.

"Everyone needs help sometimes."

"There's no need to carry everything by yourself."

Those words stayed with me.

In my previous life, I had always believed I had to endure everything alone.

Whenever Emil ignored me, I blamed myself.

Whenever he hurt me, I convinced myself I simply needed to love him more.

No one had ever reminded me that asking for help wasn't weakness.

Adrian carried two of the boxes while I followed beside him.

"How are you adjusting to the island?" he asked.

"Better than I expected," I answered honestly.

"It feels... peaceful."

"That's why I stayed here," Adrian replied.

"People come to Wanoki Island carrying heavy hearts."

"Most of them leave smiling."

I couldn't help smiling myself.

"I hope I'm one of those people."

"I think you're already getting there," he answered.

That evening, all the volunteers gathered on the beach for a small bonfire.

Music played softly while everyone shared stories and laughed together.

Sophie suddenly looked toward me.

"Penelope, tell us something about yourself."

Everyone became quiet.

I thought for a moment before speaking.

"There's honestly nothing special about me."

"I'm just someone trying to begin again."

The group smiled kindly.

Adrian quietly lifted his coffee cup.

"Then here's to new beginnings."

Everyone raised their drinks together.

"To new beginnings!"

For the first time in two lifetimes, I genuinely laughed.

Back in Bellamore, things were very different.

Emil sat alone inside his office.

Several important contracts remained untouched on his desk.

Normally he finished reviewing everything quickly.

Today, however, he couldn't concentrate.

Without realizing it, he unlocked his phone.

His conversation with Penelope remained exactly where she had left it.

Every message had been started by her.

"Good morning, Emil."

"Don't forget breakfast."

"Good luck with your meeting today."

"Drive safely."

"Have you eaten yet?"

There were hundreds of messages from Penelope.

His own replies barely filled a single screen.

Now the conversation had become completely silent.

"What exactly are you trying to do, Penelope?" he muttered.

Before he could think further, Sarah entered carrying lunch.

"You skipped breakfast again," she said gently.

"I brought your favorite meal."

"Thank you," Emil replied absentmindedly.

Sarah carefully observed him.

"You've been distracted ever since Penelope left."

"I'm not thinking about her," Emil answered immediately.

"Really?" Sarah asked softly.

"Because yesterday you accidentally called me Penelope during the meeting."

Emil froze.

He hadn't even realized it.

Sarah forced a smile.

"Maybe you're just tired."

"Maybe," Emil replied.

But deep inside, he knew something had changed.

Meanwhile, on Wanoki Island, Saturday arrived with excitement.

Sophie knocked on my door early that morning.

"Today's the Lantern Festival!" she announced happily.

"Everyone on the island celebrates together."

As evening fell, the streets filled with colorful lights.

Traditional music echoed across the harbor.

Families laughed while children carried glowing lanterns.

The peaceful atmosphere warmed my heart.

"Penelope," Adrian called.

I turned around.

He held a beautifully crafted lantern in his hands.

"Would you like to release this with me?" he asked.

I hesitated for only a second before smiling.

"I'd love to."

Together we walked toward the wooden pier overlooking the sea.

Hundreds of floating lanterns illuminated the dark water.

"When you first arrived," Adrian said quietly, "your eyes looked incredibly sad."

"Do they still?" I asked.

He shook his head.

"No."

"Now they look hopeful."

His words touched something deep inside me.

Maybe healing really was possible.

Together we released the lantern into the ocean.

I silently whispered goodbye to the girl who had spent her entire life chasing someone who never looked back.

At that same moment in Bellamore, Emil stood alone on the balcony of the McLaren mansion.

Looking at the same moon shining above Wanoki Island, an unfamiliar emptiness settled inside his heart.

For the first time, he wondered whether Penelope had truly left his life forever.
