The earliest flight from Bellamore landed on Wanoki Island shortly before noon.
As soon as the plane stopped, Emil McLaren walked out with hurried steps.
For the first time in his life, he wasn't thinking about business or family reputation.
There was only one thought in his mind.
He had to find Penelope.
He had convinced himself that everything could still be fixed.
If he apologized sincerely...
If he explained everything...
If he admitted he had been wrong...
Surely she would forgive him.
After all, Penelope had loved him for more than ten years.
How could feelings like that disappear so quickly?
With that hope, he made his way to the Ocean Research Center.
Meanwhile, I had just finished another morning of field research.
The successful environmental exhibition had brought new partnerships to the center, and everyone was celebrating.
Sophie rushed into the office with an excited smile.
"Penelope, everyone wants to take a group photo before lunch!"
"Coming," I replied with a laugh.
Life had become surprisingly simple.
Every day was filled with meaningful work.
Every evening ended with peaceful conversations by the sea.
The sadness that had once consumed my heart had almost completely disappeared.
As I stepped outside, Adrian walked toward me carrying two bottles of water.
"You forgot these," he said.
"Thank you."
"You're becoming famous around here," he teased.
"Soon you'll forget about the rest of us."
I laughed softly.
"I don't think that's possible."
"You've all become my family."
Before Adrian could respond, a familiar voice echoed across the courtyard.
"Penelope!"
The laughter around us slowly disappeared.
I turned around.
Standing near the entrance was Emil.
He looked exhausted.
His usually perfect appearance had become slightly disheveled.
Dark circles rested beneath his eyes.
It seemed he hadn't slept well in weeks.
Our eyes met for the first time since I left Bellamore.
"Penelope..." he repeated quietly.
"I finally found you."
Everyone sensed the tension and quietly stepped away.
Adrian remained where he was.
He didn't interfere.
He simply stayed close enough in case I needed him.
Emil slowly approached.
"Can we talk?"
"There's nothing left to talk about," I answered calmly.
"Please."
"Just a few minutes."
Looking at his tired face, I finally nodded.
"Alright."
"Five minutes."
We walked toward the quiet beach behind the research center.
The sound of the waves filled the silence between us.
After several moments, Emil finally spoke.
"I know the truth now."
"Sarah never died."
"Everything... everything I blamed you for was a lie."
I remained silent.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
"I'm truly sorry."
"I treated you terribly."
"I hurt you."
"I ignored you."
"I took your love for granted."
"Please... come home with me."
"We'll start over."
"I'll spend the rest of my life making things right."
I quietly looked at the ocean before answering.
"Emil..."
"Do you know what I wanted most in my previous life?"
He looked at me hopefully.
"I wanted exactly what you're offering now."
"I dreamed that one day you'd realize you loved me."
"I waited for that day for years."
"I sacrificed my happiness believing it would eventually come."
"But it never did."
"By the time you finally realized my worth..."
"There was nothing left of me."
His eyes slowly filled with regret.
"Penelope..."
"No," I interrupted gently.
"I'm not angry anymore."
"I don't hate you either."
"I've already forgiven you."
Hope immediately returned to his face.
"Then come back with me."
I slowly shook my head.
"Forgiveness doesn't mean going backward."
"It simply means I'm no longer carrying the pain you gave me."
"Bellamore is no longer my home."
"You are no longer my future."
"I've finally found a life where I can smile without pretending."
"I'm not giving that up."
Emil's shoulders slowly dropped.
For the first time, he truly understood.
The girl who once loved him without conditions was gone.
Not because she had stopped loving.
But because she had finally learned to love herself.
Behind us, Adrian quietly approached.
"Penelope," he said softly.
"Everyone's waiting."
"I'll be there in a minute."
Emil looked toward Adrian.
"Is he..."
I smiled.
"He's someone who taught me that kindness doesn't have to be earned."
"Someone who respects me."
"Someone who never made me question my worth."
Adrian didn't say a word.
Instead, he simply stood beside me.
His silent support spoke louder than any confession.
Emil gave a bitter smile.
"I understand now."
"I'm too late."
"Yes," I answered honestly.
"You are."
He nodded slowly.
"Then... I won't disturb you anymore."
"I only have one request."
"Live happily."
I smiled sincerely.
"I intend to."
Emil looked at me one final time.
For years, he had believed Penelope Hudson would always be waiting for him.
Only after losing her did he realize she had been the greatest blessing in his life.
Unfortunately...
Some blessings only become visible after they're gone.
Without another word, he turned around and walked away.
He never looked back.
Neither did I.
As he disappeared into the distance, Adrian gently stood beside me.
"Are you alright?" he asked.
I looked toward the endless blue ocean.
The waves continued moving forward, never returning to the shore they had already left behind.
"I'm better than alright," I answered.
"For the first time... I'm free."
Adrian smiled.
"Then let's keep moving forward together."
I looked at him before gently taking his hand.
"I'd like that."
Hand in hand, we walked back toward the research center where laughter echoed in the warm afternoon sunlight.
This life wasn't about revenge.
It wasn't about proving anyone wrong.
It was about choosing myself.
Choosing peace.
Choosing people who truly valued me.
And most importantly...
Choosing a path of happiness.
