I stared at the velvet ring box resting in my palm.
"Tomorrow?" I asked.
Adrian smiled. "Tomorrow."
"You're really going to make me wait?"
"After everything we've been through? Absolutely."
"That's cruel."
"It's worth it."
I laughed. "You've become impossible."
"I learned from the best," he replied.
For the first time in weeks, the future didn't feel uncertain. It felt exciting.
The next morning, I woke to dozens of unread messages.
Carter Global had officially released a public statement clearing my name. The company apologized for the investigation and confirmed that I had been completely innocent.
Hundreds of employees welcomed me back with kind messages.
Reading every comment reminded me that the truth had finally won.
Around noon, Lily called.
"Don't make any plans tonight," she said.
"Why?"
"Because Nora told me to kidnap you."
"Kidnap me?"
"Exactly. Get dressed. Wear something elegant. Don't ask questions."
Before I could protest, she hung up.
Three hours later, Lily stood in my apartment holding a navy-blue evening dress.
"This one," she declared.
"It's too fancy."
"That's the point."
"You're acting suspicious."
"I've spent too much time with Nora," she admitted with a grin.
At exactly seven o'clock, a black luxury sedan stopped outside my apartment.
The driver stepped out and opened the rear door.
"Good evening, Miss Hayes. Mr. Carter is waiting for you."
My heartbeat quickened.
The car drove through Manhattan before stopping at the rooftop garden where Adrian and I had shared our very first dinner together after discovering each other's identities.
The place had been transformed.
Thousands of tiny fairy lights illuminated the trees.
White roses lined the stone pathway.
Soft piano music floated through the evening air.
"Emma."
I turned toward the familiar voice.
Adrian stood at the end of the garden wearing a navy-blue suit, smiling in the same gentle way that had first made me fall in love with him.
"You planned all this?"
"With a little help," he admitted.
"Nora?"
"Obviously."
"And Lily?"
"She complained about keeping the secret every single day."
I laughed.
He slowly walked toward me until only a few inches separated us.
"Last week," he began, "I almost lost the woman I love."
"You didn't."
"I almost did."
"Then I almost lost my company."
"And I realized something important."
"What?" I whispered.
"Life doesn't wait until everything becomes perfect. It simply asks whether we're brave enough to choose each other anyway."
My eyes filled with tears.
"Emma Hayes," he continued, "for two years you made me smile without ever asking for anything in return. You challenged me. You supported me. You reminded me that behind every title and every business decision, I was still just a man who wanted someone to love him for who he truly was."
"You made fun of my spreadsheets too," he added with a smile.
"They deserved it," I laughed through my tears.
"Probably."
He reached into his jacket and pulled out the familiar velvet ring box.
Then, without taking his eyes off mine, he slowly lowered himself onto one knee.
I covered my mouth as tears streamed down my face.
"We've made mistakes," Adrian said.
"We've kept secrets."
"We've forgiven each other."
"We've fought for each other."
"And after everything we've survived together, there's only one question left that truly matters."
He opened the ring box.
The diamond sparkled beneath the warm lights surrounding us.
"No more secrets."
"No more disguises."
"No more pretending."
"Emma Hayes... will you marry me?"
The world seemed to disappear.
There was no company.
No investigation.
No lies.
Only the man I loved.
"Yes," I whispered.
He smiled.
"I think I need to hear that one more time."
Laughing through happy tears, I nodded.
"Yes! A thousand times yes!"
Applause erupted around us.
Hidden behind the trees stood Lily, Nora, Mr. Collins, members of our project team, and even the chairman of the board.
"Finally!" Lily shouted.
"Do you know how long we've been hiding back there?"
Everyone laughed.
Adrian gently slid the ring onto my finger.
It fit perfectly.
"How did you know my ring size?" I asked.
"You left one of your rings at my apartment months ago," he admitted.
"You've been planning this for that long?"
"Even longer."
Nora walked over, wiping away tears.
"Keeping this secret was harder than any board meeting I've ever attended," she joked.
"You knew all along?" I asked.
"Since before the Chicago trip," she replied.
"The investigation delayed everything, but maybe this ending is even more beautiful."
Six months later, the church was filled with family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who had stood beside us through the hardest chapter of our lives.
Lily adjusted my veil one final time.
"Ready?" she asked.
"More than ever."
The church doors opened.
At the end of the aisle stood Adrian.
The moment our eyes met, he smiled.
There were no lies left between us.
No fear.
Only love.
"You look beautiful," he whispered as I reached him.
"You look nervous," I teased.
"I am."
"Good. Now we're even."
Everyone laughed softly.
The ceremony was simple, heartfelt, and exactly the way we wanted it.
"I do," Adrian said.
"I do," I replied.
"By the authority vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride."
This time there was no hesitation.
Only certainty.
Only love.
One year later, a framed wedding photograph sat on the desk in my new office.
After helping strengthen Carter Global's cybersecurity and compliance systems, I had been promoted to Director of Strategic Operations.
Across the hallway, Adrian was still the CEO.
At home, he was simply my husband.
"Mrs. Carter," he called from his office doorway.
"Yes, Mr. Carter?" I replied playfully.
"Lunch?"
"Only if you're paying."
"I always do."
He walked over, took my hand, and kissed my forehead.
"Still no secrets?" he asked.
"Never again," I answered.
As we walked toward the elevator together, I glanced at the engagement ring that had almost never been worn.
It reminded me that the greatest love stories aren't perfect from the beginning.
They're built by two people who choose each other again and again, even after life gives them every reason to walk away.
Hand in hand, we stepped into our future together.
