As summer approached, Mr. Knightley invited a small party to visit Donwell Abbey.
The invitation delighted everyone.
Donwell was one of the finest estates in the area, respected not for luxury but for its excellent management.
Everything there reflected Mr. Knightley's character.
Practical.
Orderly.
Dependable.
Emma had visited Donwell many times before.
Yet this visit felt different.
Perhaps because she had begun seeing its owner differently.
The morning was beautiful.
The gardens were filled with sunlight.
The orchards stretched across the landscape in neat rows.
Birdsong drifted through the warm air.
As the guests explored the grounds, Emma found herself observing Mr. Knightley.
He moved naturally among his tenants and servants.
Everyone greeted him with genuine respect.
Not fear.
Not obligation.
Respect.
Emma watched an elderly tenant stop him on a path.
Mr. Knightley listened patiently, asked several questions, and promised assistance.
The conversation lasted nearly ten minutes.
Not once did he appear impatient.
Emma suddenly realized something.
This was the reason people trusted him.
He truly cared.
Not in speeches.
Not in grand gestures.
In actions.
Consistent actions repeated over many years.
Later, while the guests rested beneath the trees, Mrs. Weston joined Emma.
“You seem thoughtful.”
Emma smiled faintly.
“Do I?”
“Very.”
Mrs. Weston followed Emma's gaze toward Mr. Knightley.
A knowing expression appeared in her eyes.
Emma noticed immediately.
“What are you thinking?”
Mrs. Weston laughed.
“Nothing dangerous.”
“That means something dangerous.”
“Only that George Knightley improves with age.”
Emma looked away quickly.
Her cheeks felt unexpectedly warm.
Mrs. Weston said nothing more.
She did not need to.
The thought remained with Emma throughout the day.
By evening, she was forced to admit a truth she had avoided for weeks.
Mr. Knightley mattered to her.
Far more than she had ever realized.
