The truth arrived suddenly.
For months Highbury had speculated about Frank Churchill and Jane Fairfax.
No one knew what connected them.
No one suspected the reality.
Then everything changed.
Mrs. Weston received a letter.
Within hours the news spread throughout Highbury.
Frank Churchill and Jane Fairfax were engaged.
Secretly engaged.
They had been engaged for months.
Emma could hardly believe it.
Every strange conversation.
Every awkward silence.
Every mysterious glance.
Every unexplained behavior.
Suddenly everything made sense.
Frank's attention toward Jane.
Jane's nervousness.
The pianoforte.
The secrecy.
All of it.
Emma felt stunned.
She also felt ashamed.
How many times had she judged Jane unfairly?
How often had she treated Jane's private pain as entertainment?
Mr. Knightley had warned her.
Again.
And again.
And again.
As always, he had been right.
When Emma visited Jane shortly afterward, the meeting felt entirely different.
For the first time there were no secrets between them.
Jane looked happier than Emma had ever seen her.
Not cheerful.
Not excited.
Simply happy.
A quiet happiness.
The kind that comes after a long struggle.
“I owe you an apology,” Emma said.
Jane looked surprised.
“For what?”
“For many things.”
Jane smiled gently.
“Then let us forget them.”
Emma nodded.
Perhaps friendship could begin where misunderstanding ended.
Meanwhile Frank Churchill seemed transformed.
The restless uncertainty had vanished.
For the first time he appeared completely sincere.
Emma realized she genuinely liked him.
Just not in the way she had once imagined.
That chapter of her life was finally closed.
