The next great change came from Mr. Knightley.
Unexpectedly.
Completely unexpectedly.
One evening he arrived at Hartfield while Mr. Woodhouse was visiting Isabella.
For the first time in years Emma found herself entirely alone with him.
The situation made her nervous.
Very nervous.
Mr. Knightley seemed nervous too.
Which was even more alarming.
They walked into the garden together.
The evening was warm.
The sun was beginning to set.
Neither spoke immediately.
Finally Mr. Knightley stopped beside an old tree.
“Emma.”
The way he said her name made her heart race.
“Yes?”
He looked directly at her.
No teasing.
No advice.
No arguments.
Only honesty.
“I cannot remain silent any longer.”
Emma forgot how to breathe.
“George...”
“Let me finish.”
She nodded.
His voice was steady.
But emotion lived beneath every word.
“I have loved you for a very long time.”
The world seemed to stop.
Emma stared at him.
Unable to speak.
Unable to move.
Mr. Knightley continued.
“I never intended to tell you. I believed you happy without marriage. I believed my feelings unnecessary.”
His expression softened.
“But lately the thought of losing you became unbearable.”
Emma felt tears fill her eyes.
Not from sadness.
From relief.
Months of fear disappeared in an instant.
Harriet was mistaken.
Frank Churchill was irrelevant.
All the uncertainty vanished.
Only one truth remained.
George Knightley loved her.
The man she loved loved her back.
At last Emma found her voice.
“I have been so foolish.”
Mr. Knightley smiled slightly.
“That is not an answer.”
Emma laughed through tears.
Then she stepped closer.
“I love you too.”
The words felt wonderfully simple.
Wonderfully true.
Everything changed after that.
And yet somehow nothing changed at all.
He was still George Knightley.
She was still Emma Woodhouse.
Only now there were no misunderstandings between them.
