Marriage changed many things, but not everything.
Emma quickly discovered that being Mrs. Knightley felt surprisingly natural.
George Knightley moved into Hartfield as promised, allowing Mr. Woodhouse to remain in the home he loved.
The arrangement caused some curiosity in neighboring villages, but Highbury accepted it happily.
Everyone understood the reason.
Mr. Woodhouse could not bear losing Emma.
And Mr. Knightley loved her enough to make the sacrifice without hesitation.
Their married life settled into a comfortable rhythm.
Mornings often began with breakfast shared between Emma, Mr. Knightley, and her father.
Mr. Woodhouse continued worrying about weather, health, and food exactly as before.
The only difference was that Mr. Knightley now listened patiently alongside Emma.
Sometimes they exchanged secret smiles across the table.
Emma loved those moments.
For years she had feared marriage would require giving up her independence.
Instead she found companionship.
Real companionship.
Not flattery.
Not admiration.
Partnership.
When Emma made mistakes, Mr. Knightley corrected her honestly.
When Mr. Knightley became too serious, Emma reminded him to laugh.
They balanced one another perfectly.
One evening they walked through Hartfield's gardens together.
The sun was setting over the fields.
Emma slipped her hand into his.
“Do you regret moving here?” she asked.
Mr. Knightley looked genuinely surprised.
“Never.”
“Not even a little?”
“Not even enough to measure.”
Emma smiled.
“You know, younger versions of us would never have believed this.”
“Younger versions of us argued too much.”
“We still argue.”
“Yes,” he admitted. “But now it is more enjoyable.”
Emma laughed.
Life, she realized, had become wonderfully simple.
