Nearly a year after their marriage, Frank Churchill and Jane Fairfax returned to Highbury for an extended visit.
The difference in both of them was remarkable.
Frank seemed calmer.
Less restless.
Marriage had not reduced his charm, but it had given it direction.
Jane appeared transformed as well.
The quiet sadness Emma once noticed had disappeared.
In its place was confidence.
Peace.
Happiness.
When Emma welcomed them back to Hartfield, she found herself genuinely pleased.
Any old misunderstandings had long vanished.
“Highbury feels smaller than I remembered,” Frank remarked.
“That is because you finally stopped running away from it,” Emma replied.
Jane laughed softly.
Frank placed a hand over his heart.
“Mrs. Knightley grows more dangerous every year.”
“Experience has improved my aim.”
The afternoon passed pleasantly.
At one point Emma found herself alone with Jane in the garden.
The moment felt significant.
Years earlier such privacy would have been awkward.
Now it felt comfortable.
“You seem happy,” Emma said.
Jane smiled.
“I am.”
“I am glad.”
There was a brief silence.
Then Jane surprised her.
“I think we understand each other better now.”
Emma nodded.
“I think so too.”
Neither woman mentioned the past directly.
They no longer needed to.
Friendship had quietly replaced judgment.
And that friendship felt like another small victory.
