False Noise Accusations

Chapter 15: The Name Behind the Conspiracy

By the following morning, the courthouse was surrounded by reporters.

The story had changed overnight.

I was no longer the woman accused of causing an elderly woman's death.

I was the homeowner who had been deliberately framed.

But I wasn't interested in headlines.

I wanted the truth.

The investigator called me into his office before noon.

He placed a thin folder on the desk.

“We found the county official.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who?”

He opened the folder.

“Deputy County Clerk Rebecca Sloan.”

I recognized the name immediately.

She had been present at my emergency hearing.

She had been the person who signed the paperwork allowing the case to move forward so quickly.

I remembered the way she'd looked at me that day.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Almost impatient.

As though she already knew how the story was supposed to end.

“What did she do?” I asked.

The investigator slid several documents toward me.

Rebecca had exchanged dozens of messages with Marcus's legal team.

She had provided them with confidential court scheduling information.

She had also received several unexplained payments through a consulting company registered under her brother's name.

But there was more.

One message stopped me cold.

“Make sure Wells doesn't request the building's maintenance records before the hearing.”

I looked up.

“She knew about the hidden equipment.”

“Exactly.”

The investigator continued.

“She wasn't just helping Marcus after the accusation was made. She was involved before the lawsuit existed.”

That meant the conspiracy had been planned from the beginning.

Rebecca was arrested that afternoon.

When officers entered her office, they found a second encrypted drive.

It contained copies of property records, private financial information, and reports on dozens of other homeowners.

I wasn't the only target.

Marcus's company had been trying to acquire several units in the building.

Owners who refused to sell had received complaints, anonymous threats, or sudden code violations.

My case was simply the most elaborate.

Then the investigator found something unexpected.

A folder containing my name.

Inside was a photograph of my family.

It had been taken months before I bought Unit 1608.

I stared at it.

“Why were they watching me before I purchased the apartment?”

The investigator paused.

“That's what we're trying to determine.”

Another document was placed in front of me.

It was an old insurance report.

My late husband had once worked on a construction project connected to Marcus's company.

I felt the room tilt.

My husband had died several years earlier.

As far as I knew, his work had nothing to do with Marcus.

But the report showed otherwise.

He had discovered irregularities in one of the company's construction contracts.

He had reported them internally before his death.

The complaint had disappeared.

So had the investigation.

My hands trembled.

“Are you saying this started with him?”

The investigator nodded slowly.

“We don't know yet.”

“But it gives Marcus a possible motive for keeping an eye on you.”

Suddenly, the apartment didn't feel like a random target anymore.

They hadn't chosen me because I was easy to pressure.

They may have chosen me because of who my husband had been.

That evening, Marcus finally contacted my attorney.

He wanted a meeting.

My attorney advised me not to go.

I agreed.

But Marcus didn't give up.

He sent one message directly to me.

“You think you've won because you found the people who worked for me.”

“You haven't.”

A second message followed.

“You don't know what your husband discovered.”

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

“Ask him about the missing construction files.”

My heart pounded.

My husband was gone.

There was no way to ask him.

But there was someone who might know.

His former business partner.

I hadn't spoken to him in years.

I immediately searched for his number.

When he answered, I said only one thing.

“I need to know what my husband discovered before he died.”

There was a long silence.

Then his voice changed.

“Genevieve…”

“You should have been told this a long time ago.”

I held my breath.

“Your husband wasn't investigating a minor construction problem.”

“He found evidence that could have destroyed Marcus Vale's entire company.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What evidence?”

He lowered his voice.

“I still have a copy.”

“And if Marcus knows you're looking for it…”

He stopped.

“Then you need to be very careful.”

You finished
