For the first time since this nightmare began, I stopped reacting.
I started planning.
Marcus believed he had taken everything from me. My reputation. My peace. My husband's unfinished investigation. Even the evidence he thought he had destroyed.
What he didn't know was that the investigators had already preserved copies of every important file.
And now we had something even more valuable.
A confession.
Adriana had agreed to cooperate fully.
She gave investigators access to her phone, her bank records, and every message Marcus had sent her.
The messages were worse than I expected.
Marcus had instructed her exactly what to say in court.
He had even written the story about my children's voices and the nighttime noise.
But one message made everyone in the room go silent.
“Once Genevieve is convicted, the building will be forced into liquidation. Make sure she never gets the chance to fight it.”
There it was.
The real motive.
The noise accusation had never been about Adriana's grandmother.
It had always been about my apartment.
The investigator looked at me.
“We can issue an arrest warrant.”
I shook my head.
“He'll run.”
“He already knows we're coming.”
My attorney nodded slowly.
“Then we give him a reason not to.”
We created a trap.
A false report was leaked through one of the channels Marcus still monitored.
It claimed that the original storage drive had been damaged and that the remaining evidence was incomplete.
It also suggested that I was preparing to leave the country.
Within hours, someone accessed an old account connected to Marcus.
He was watching.
That night, I received another call.
“You should stop digging,” Marcus said.
His voice was no longer calm.
“You've already lost.”
I kept my voice steady.
“If I've lost, why are you still calling me?”
Silence.
Then he said, “Because I don't want anyone else to get hurt.”
I knew what that meant.
He was threatening me.
“You killed my husband,” I said.
Another silence.
“Your husband made his choice.”
My blood ran cold.
He had practically admitted it.
The call was being recorded under a legal warrant.
The investigator signaled for me to keep him talking.
I swallowed my anger.
“Where are you?”
Marcus laughed.
“You really think I'd tell you?”
“No,” I said.
“But I think you're going to tell someone else.”
He hung up.
Twenty minutes later, investigators traced the signal to a private warehouse outside the city.
Police surrounded the building before dawn.
But Marcus wasn't there.
Only one of his employees was waiting inside.
He was arrested immediately.
And on a desk beside him was a folder containing property transfer documents for my apartment building.
There was also a handwritten note.
“Move forward with the final purchase once Genevieve is convicted.”
The trap had worked.
But Marcus was still free.
Then the arrested employee finally spoke.
He told investigators Marcus had another safe house.
A place nobody knew about.
A place connected to my husband's final investigation.
By sunrise, investigators had the address.
It was an abandoned office building on the edge of town.
We arrived just as Marcus was leaving through the rear entrance.
He saw the police cars.
For one second, our eyes met.
Then he ran.
Officers chased him through the alley.
He slipped on the wet pavement and crashed hard against a concrete wall.
When they caught up with him, he was still trying to reach for something in his coat.
It was a small key.
The key opened a locked room inside the abandoned building.
And inside that room was the final piece of the puzzle.
Boxes of documents.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
And a complete record of every person Marcus had bribed or threatened.
Including the official who had helped push my case through the courthouse.
I stood outside the room as the investigators carried everything out.
For the first time in months, I could breathe.
Marcus had finally been caught.
But one question remained.
Why had my husband been the only person who ever discovered the truth?
The answer was waiting inside his final file.
And when I opened it, I realized his investigation had never been finished.
