Jessica had hesitated at first, right there in the operating room.
No matter what, the baby inside her was nearly eight months old. She had gone through so much just to get pregnant with this child. The doctor had told her before that her body wasn't suited for another pregnancy. But she still wanted to give Michael a baby.
Maybe it was guilt. Or maybe it was fear that someday he would find out the truth, and she could use this child to keep him tied to her.
But then she thought about what Michael had said.
"I'm not raising another man's son."
Those words had cut deeper than she wanted to admit.
She had expected Michael to compromise. She had expected him to swallow his pride, accept Noah, and continue pretending that their marriage could survive.
Instead, he had humiliated her in front of everyone.
The images of her and Ryan had been displayed across the screens for the entire room to see.
She had felt every stare.
Every whisper.
Every judgment.
And she blamed Michael for all of it.
Her hands tightened around the hospital blanket.
"If he wants to leave me, then let him leave."
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
"I don't need anyone who can abandon me this easily."
The doctor looked at her carefully.
"Your pregnancy is advanced. If you are having contractions, our priority is to stabilize you and protect the baby."
Jessica closed her eyes.
She could still hear Michael begging her in the hallway.
"The baby is innocent. That's a life…"
For one brief moment, her heart wavered.
Then Ryan's face appeared in her mind.
Noah's frightened expression.
The humiliation at the party.
And finally, Michael's cold refusal to accept Noah.
Her expression hardened.
"I don't want the baby anymore."
The doctor frowned.
"Jessica, please understand that this is not something to decide out of anger."
"I'm not angry."
She lied.
"I've made my decision."
The medical team continued trying to manage the situation safely, but Jessica refused every attempt to change her mind.
Outside the room, Linda paced nervously.
Ryan sat in a chair with Noah beside him.
No one noticed that Michael was no longer there.
No one tried to find him.
Everyone was too focused on Jessica.
Eventually, Linda approached Ryan.
"She'll be all right, won't she?"
Ryan nodded confidently.
"She'll be fine. Jessica is strong."
Noah looked up at him.
"Is Aunt Jessica going to be okay?"
Ryan forced a smile.
"Of course."
But behind the closed hospital door, Jessica was making a decision that would change all their lives.
Hours later, the corridor fell silent.
A nurse stepped out of the room.
Linda immediately stood.
"How is my daughter?"
The nurse hesitated.
"She's awake, but she's very weak."
Linda's shoulders relaxed.
"And the baby?"
The nurse's expression became solemn.
"I'm sorry."
Linda's face went blank.
Ryan stood up slowly.
"What do you mean?"
The nurse lowered her voice.
"The baby didn't survive."
Linda covered her mouth.
Ryan stared at the floor, speechless.
Inside the room, Jessica opened her eyes.
Her first instinct was to touch her stomach.
Her hand froze.
There was no movement anymore.
No gentle kick.
No life waiting to meet her.
Her lips began to tremble.
"Where is Michael?"
The nurse looked away.
"He left the hospital."
Jessica's face changed instantly.
"He... left?"
"Yes."
"Did he say where he went?"
"No."
Jessica stared at the ceiling.
She had expected him to stay.
Even after everything, some part of her had believed Michael would remain by her side.
After all, hadn't he stayed five years ago?
Hadn't he forgiven her when she had betrayed him?
Hadn't he spent five years trying to make their marriage work?
She reached for her phone.
Her fingers shook as she dialed his number.
The call went unanswered.
She tried again.
Nothing.
Again.
Still nothing.
A strange fear settled over her.
For the first time, she wondered if Michael really meant what he had said.
Maybe he wasn't coming back.
Maybe this time, there would be no apology, no forgiveness, and no second chance.
Tears slipped down the sides of her face.
"Michael..."
She whispered his name like it could bring him back.
But the room remained silent.
Then she noticed something on the bedside table.
Her handbag.
Jessica reached for it and opened it.
The divorce papers were gone.
Her heart stopped.
She searched through the bag frantically until she found the signed agreement tucked into a side pocket.
Michael had taken his copy.
He had signed it.
He had left.
And he had not even waited for her to wake up.
Jessica's hands began to shake violently.
Five years ago, she had threatened to die if Michael divorced her.
This time, Michael hadn't given her the chance to make the same threat again.
He had simply walked away.
And Jessica finally realized something she should have understood years ago.
She hadn't lost Michael because of one terrible night.
She had lost him because she had spent five years proving that night had never been a mistake.
She had chosen Ryan.
She had chosen Noah.
She had chosen the lie.
And now Michael had finally chosen himself.
