Graham barely slept.

His attorneys had spent the entire night preparing for the emergency hearing, assuring him that the prosecution still lacked enough evidence for an arrest.

"The burned server doesn't automatically prove intent," his lead attorney said. "We'll argue that you went to the lake house after the fire started."

Graham nodded, but his hands refused to stop shaking.

For the first time since the adoption hearing, he was beginning to understand that this was no longer a game he could win.

Across town, I stood outside the courthouse with Evelyn.

The same courthouse.

The same front steps where Graham had worn his gold Winner of the Year sash only a few days earlier.

Only today, there were no cheers.

Only cameras.

Only reporters waiting to see who would walk in wearing handcuffs.

"Ready?" Evelyn asked.

I looked at the courthouse doors.

"I wasn't ready when he destroyed my life."

"I am now."

Inside, the courtroom was nearly full.

Members of the Veale Foundation board occupied one side.

Journalists filled the public gallery.

Even several judges from neighboring courtrooms quietly slipped inside during recess.

Everyone wanted to witness what had become the city's biggest legal scandal.

Assistant District Attorney Marcus Cole rose first.

"Your Honor, the Commonwealth is requesting an arrest warrant for Graham Veale on charges including perjury, obstruction of justice, conspiracy to interfere with child welfare proceedings, witness manipulation, evidence destruction, and financial coercion."

A quiet murmur spread through the courtroom.

Graham's attorney stood immediately.

"Your Honor, my client voluntarily appeared today."

"He has fully cooperated."

Marcus didn't even look toward him.

"Your Honor, the defendant attempted to destroy evidence less than twelve hours after learning investigators had obtained a search warrant."

He placed several photographs before the judge.

The burned server.

The gasoline containers.

Security footage showing Graham entering the lake house carrying fuel cans.

"The Commonwealth also recovered deleted files from the damaged server."

Another folder appeared on the courtroom screen.

Game Score.

The prosecutor opened the spreadsheet.

Rows of dares stretched back more than a decade.

"Year after year," Marcus said, "the defendant and his associates assigned points for increasingly dangerous challenges."

The courtroom remained silent.

Then Marcus reached the final row.

Current Year.

Challenge:

Convince the court Nora Bell is unfit.

Prize:

Maisie.

Even Graham's attorneys looked horrified.

One reporter quietly lowered her camera.

Another wiped tears from her eyes.

Marcus opened another recovered document.

"Operation New Beginning."

"The document outlines the exact sequence of events that occurred."

"False testimony."

"Emergency investigation."

"Transfer of temporary custody to Tessa Moore."

"Removal of Nora Bell from marital assets."

"Media containment."

"Foundation reputation management."

"Every step happened exactly as written."

The judge slowly removed his glasses.

"Mr. Veale..."

"Did you prepare this document?"

Graham swallowed.

"No."

"Who did?"

"I...I don't know."

"You don't know?"

Marcus clicked another recovered file.

The screen displayed document properties.

Author:

Graham Veale.

Created On:

Three weeks before the adoption hearing.

Last Modified:

Patricia Veale.

The courtroom erupted.

"Order!"

The judge struck the gavel twice.

"Order in this courtroom!"

Marcus wasn't finished.

"The Commonwealth calls its final witness."

Detective Harris entered carrying a sealed evidence box.

"Inside this box," he said, "is the original hard drive recovered from the lake house server."

"Our forensic laboratory restored over ninety-two percent of the deleted data."

"Among the recovered files were video recordings."

The lights dimmed.

A projector flickered to life.

The video showed Patricia sitting at the dining room table.

Graham sat across from her.

Tessa stood beside the window.

Patricia spoke first.

"Once Nora loses the hearing, she'll panic."

"She'll make mistakes."

"People always believe emotional women are unstable."

Tessa laughed.

"Then Maisie's finally mine."

Patricia smiled.

"Temporarily."

"Long enough for the child to bond with you."

"After that, even if Nora wins later, the judge may refuse to move her again."

Graham looked uncertain.

"Isn't this too far?"

Patricia leaned forward.

"Do you want to win the dare or not?"

After several seconds...

Graham nodded.

"Fine."

"I'll do it."

The video ended.

No one spoke.

Not even Graham.

The silence lasted almost twenty seconds.

Finally, the judge broke it.

"Mr. Veale..."

"Stand."

Graham slowly rose.

"Based upon the overwhelming evidence presented before this court..."

"I find probable cause exists on every requested charge."

"The arrest warrant is approved immediately."

Two sheriff's deputies stepped forward.

"Mr. Graham Veale..."

"Turn around."

For several seconds, Graham simply stared at me.

His confidence was gone.

His arrogance was gone.

Only fear remained.

"Nora..."

"Please..."

"Tell them this isn't what you wanted."

I met his eyes.

"You're right."

"What I wanted was my daughter."

"You took her."

"Now the law will take its turn."

The deputies placed handcuffs around his wrists.

Camera shutters exploded throughout the courtroom.

The same man who had walked out of this courthouse wearing a gold winner's sash...

Was now being led out wearing steel handcuffs.

As he reached the courtroom doors, he turned back one last time.

"Mom!" he shouted.

"Do something!"

Everyone looked toward Patricia.

She didn't move.

Instead...

She quietly picked up her purse...

Stood...

And walked out through the opposite exit without looking back at her son.

You finished
