Chapter 4: Life Without Waiting

A month passed after I left Owen.

For the first time in five years, my calendar was empty.

There were no wedding planners calling to confirm decorations.

No venues asking whether we wanted to postpone or cancel.

No jewelers reminding us to resize wedding bands.

Most importantly...

There was no waiting.

I hadn't realized how much of my life had revolved around waiting for someone else.

Waiting for Owen to finish work.

Waiting for his phone calls.

Waiting for him to choose me.

Waiting for promises that never became reality.

Now every morning belonged entirely to me.

Claire convinced me to start painting again.

"You used to love it," she reminded me.

"Before your entire life became law offices and wedding venues."

She wasn't wrong.

During college, I had dreamed of becoming an interior designer.

I loved creating beautiful spaces.

But after getting engaged, I slowly abandoned those dreams.

Owen's career always came first.

Mine could wait.

Everything could wait.

Except it never stopped waiting.

I rented a small studio downtown and began sketching again.

The smell of fresh paint felt strangely comforting.

Each brushstroke reminded me that I still existed outside of someone else's expectations.

One afternoon, my former professor unexpectedly visited the studio.

"Emily Carter?"

"Professor Lewis!"

He smiled warmly as he studied my work.

"Your talent hasn't disappeared."

"You've simply neglected it."

"Life became... complicated."

"Life usually does."

He handed me a business card.

"A design firm is looking for new talent."

"I recommended you."

I stared at the card in surprise.

"You still remembered me?"

"Of course."

"Students with real passion aren't easy to forget."

For the first time in years, excitement replaced sadness.

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me."

"Just stop wasting your talent."

Meanwhile, Owen's life had become increasingly chaotic.

Without Emily organizing his schedule, paying household bills, and quietly supporting every part of his daily routine, even simple tasks became difficult.

One morning he arrived at court wearing mismatched cufflinks.

The following day he forgot an important client meeting.

His secretary stared at him in disbelief.

"Mr. Tadder... are you alright lately?"

"I'm fine."

"You don't seem fine."

"Emily handled most of these things, didn't she?"

He didn't answer.

Because she had.

He had never noticed how much she quietly managed behind the scenes.

Laundry.

Groceries.

Appointments.

Birthday gifts for his parents.

Anniversary reservations.

Even reminding him to eat lunch.

Without her, his perfectly organized life began falling apart.

Vanessa noticed the change as well.

"Mr. Tadder," she said carefully one afternoon.

"You forgot your medication again."

He looked up from his desk.

"Emily always reminded me."

The words escaped before he could stop them.

Vanessa remained quiet.

"You should call her."

"She blocked my number."

"Then visit her."

"Her father threatened to call the police."

Vanessa sighed.

"I don't think this is about finding her anymore."

"It's about proving you've changed."

"How do I do that?"

"I honestly don't know."

"Because I don't think you've realized what you actually lost."

That evening, Owen returned to the empty apartment.

Emily's favorite reading chair was gone.

The small plants she cared for had disappeared.

Even the coffee mugs she always used were missing.

The apartment echoed with silence.

For the first time, it no longer felt like home.

He opened the refrigerator.

There were only bottled water and leftover takeout containers.

Emily had always cooked.

Not because he asked her to.

Because she wanted them to share dinner every night.

He suddenly remembered how many times she had eaten alone while waiting for him.

"I'll be home by seven."

He rarely arrived before midnight.

She never complained.

She simply reheated the food.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Back at the design studio, I attended my first interview.

The firm's director, Sophia Bennett, carefully examined my portfolio.

"These are impressive."

"Why haven't you worked professionally before?"

I smiled awkwardly.

"Life took me in another direction."

"Well," Sophia replied, closing the folder,

"Perhaps life has finally brought you back."

She extended her hand.

"Welcome to Bennett Interior Design."

I blinked in surprise.

"You're hiring me?"

"Absolutely."

"We need creative people."

"Not perfect ones."

I accepted her handshake.

Walking out of the office, I couldn't stop smiling.

It wasn't because I had found a job.

It was because I had found a future.

One that didn't depend on anyone else's promises.

That evening, Claire insisted we celebrate.

"To new beginnings!" she cheered, raising her coffee cup.

"To never wearing another wedding dress unless someone deserves it," I laughed.

"Exactly!"

As we talked, the television mounted inside the café suddenly switched to a local business interview.

The reporter stood outside Tadder Law Firm.

"Managing Partner Owen Tadder has recently withdrawn from several high-profile legal events," the anchor reported.

"Sources claim the respected attorney has declined multiple promotions and public appearances over the past month."

Claire glanced at me nervously.

"Want me to change the channel?"

"No."

I watched quietly.

The camera briefly showed Owen leaving the office.

He looked exhausted.

His beard had grown in.

Dark circles shadowed his eyes.

He no longer resembled the confident lawyer everyone admired.

For a brief moment...

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Then another memory surfaced.

Standing alone at our fifty-second canceled wedding.

Watching his car disappear while he drove another woman to the hospital.

The sympathy disappeared.

Not because I hated him.

Because I finally remembered what he had done to me.

Later that night, Owen stood outside my parents' house once again.

This time he carried no flowers.

No cake.

No expensive gifts.

Only a handwritten letter.

He slipped it into the mailbox before quietly walking away.

The next morning, my mother handed me the envelope.

"It's from him."

I stared at Owen's familiar handwriting.

For several long seconds, I considered throwing it away unopened.

Instead...

I slowly unfolded the paper.

The first line made me stop breathing.

"Emily, I finally realized that I don't remember your favorite cake because I stopped paying attention to the woman I thought would always stay."

You finished
