For the first time in ten years, I woke up without checking my phone for a message from Hollis.
It felt strangely peaceful.
There was no good morning text waiting for me. No question about where I was. No reminder about some Lombardi event I was expected to attend.
Just silence.
And I realized I liked it.

Three days later, Cross & Crumb received an invitation to bid on the largest hospitality contract in the city.
The client was Sterling Crown Hotels, a company known for working almost exclusively with established luxury brands.
My assistant placed the invitation on my desk.
"This could double our annual revenue."
I read the proposal carefully.
"Then let's make sure they regret ever considering anyone else."
She laughed.
"That's the Willa I know."
I smiled.
For years, I had been the woman behind Hollis Lombardi.
His fiancée.
His future wife.
The outsider the family tolerated because he had chosen me.
Now I wanted people to know me without his name attached to mine.
And I was going to give them a reason to remember it.
***
The Sterling Crown presentation was scheduled for Friday.
I spent the entire week preparing.
Our pastry team developed an exclusive dessert collection inspired by the city's history. I personally redesigned the presentation, tested every recipe, and stayed in the kitchen until midnight.
On Friday morning, I walked into the meeting room wearing a simple black suit.
No engagement ring.
No Lombardi jewelry.
No borrowed status.
Just my name on the presentation folder.
Willa Cross.
Founder and Creative Director, Cross & Crumb.
When I finished speaking, the room was silent for several seconds.
Then the hotel director stood and shook my hand.
"Ms. Cross, I think we've found our partner."
I exhaled slowly.
We had won.

I didn't know Hollis had been watching from across the street.
He had come to the same hotel for a completely different meeting.
But when he saw me walk out surrounded by executives, smiling without him, something inside his chest tightened.
He remembered another woman from years ago.
The woman who used to wait outside his office with coffee.
The woman who knew his schedule better than he did.
The woman who would cancel her own plans whenever he called.
That woman was gone.
And for the first time, Hollis understood that losing Willa wasn't simply losing his fiancée.
He had lost the person who had built her life around him.
Now she was building one without him.
***
That evening, I returned to Cross & Crumb to celebrate with my team.
Someone opened champagne.
Music filled the kitchen.
Everyone was laughing.
Then the front door opened.
The room slowly went quiet.
Hollis walked inside.
He looked exhausted.
But this time, I didn't feel responsible for it.
He stopped several feet away from me.
"Congratulations."
I nodded.
"Thank you."
"I heard about Sterling Crown."
"Then you heard correctly."
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"You always were better than you believed."
I looked directly at him.
"No, Hollis. I always was better than you allowed me to believe."
His smile disappeared.
The words landed exactly where I intended them to.
He took a slow breath.
"I deserve that."
"You deserve much more than words."
He lowered his eyes.
"I know."
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he said quietly, "I'm not here to ask you to come back."
I raised an eyebrow.
"Then why are you here?"
"Because I wanted to see you succeed."
I almost laughed.
"You could have done that from a distance."
He nodded.
"I know."
He turned toward the door.
Before leaving, he stopped.
"Willa... I'm finally learning how to lose you without trying to punish you for leaving."
I watched him walk away.
For the first time, I believed him.
But believing him didn't mean I wanted him back.
It only meant I was finally free to stop hating him.
