The next morning, the council hall was filled before sunrise.
Every member of Greenridge had heard the truth by then. The forged records, the stolen inheritance, the payments, Richard's confession, and Vera's role could no longer be buried beneath another lie.
I stood before the council wearing my mother's moonstone pendant. It was repaired, but the crack remained across its center.
I had decided not to hide it.
Some things did not need to be made perfect again to be worth keeping.
The High Council rose when I entered.
Evelyn Wren, by blood and by law, you are recognized as the sole surviving heir of the Wren estate, the council announced. All property, rights, and titles unlawfully taken from your family are restored to you effective immediately.
For the first time in years, I heard my name without shame attached to it.
No one called me abandoned.
No one called me a mistake.
I was Evelyn Wren.
The daughter Elias had tried to protect.
The heir my mother had sacrificed everything to save.
And finally, I was free.
Richard Vale was stripped of his council position and sentenced for conspiracy, fraud, and the murder of Elias Wren's reputation and legacy. The Calder family accounts involved in the scheme were seized for investigation.
Kane stood silently at the back of the hall.
He had lost his Alpha title after the council determined that his family's corruption and his own actions had made him unfit to lead Greenridge. The estate he once believed would always belong to him was being divided under council supervision.
But strangely, when I looked at him, I felt no satisfaction.
Only sadness.
After the council meeting, Kane found me outside beneath the old oak tree.
I know you are leaving, he said quietly.
I nodded.
I will not stop you this time.
His voice broke on the last word.
I looked at the man who had once been my whole world. The man who had loved me, betrayed me, defended another woman, and destroyed the future we once dreamed about.
You chased me for so long, Kane.
He lowered his eyes.
I thought if I could get you back, everything would be fixed.
It will not be, I whispered. Some things are not meant to be fixed. They are meant to be learned from.
Tears filled his eyes.
Do you hate me?
I thought about the oath stone. The broken pendant. The child I had lost. The nights I had cried alone. The years I had spent believing I was never enough.
Then I shook my head.
No. I do not hate you anymore.
For the first time, Kane looked relieved.
Then I continued.
Because hating you would still mean carrying you with me.
His expression collapsed.
I walked away before he could say anything else.
Months later, the Wren estate was no longer abandoned.
I restored the old house and opened part of the property as a healing sanctuary for wolves who had nowhere else to go. The council granted me a seat as Wren heir, and for the first time, I used my family's name to protect people instead of becoming trapped by it.
Vera was removed from Greenridge and placed under council supervision while her crimes were investigated. She had lost the Luna crown she had spent years chasing.
And Kane?
He left Greenridge.
I never asked where he went.
I had spent too much of my life waiting for him to choose me.
I was done waiting.
One evening, I stood on the balcony of the Wren estate and touched the repaired moonstone hanging against my chest.
The crack was still there.
So was I.
But I was no longer broken.
I had survived the betrayal, the lies, the loss, and the love that had once consumed me.
Kane had lost everything chasing me.
But I had gained something far more valuable.
My name.
My freedom.
My future.
And most importantly, myself.
For the first time in my life, I did not wonder who would choose me.
I knew exactly who I would choose.
Me.
