The next morning, my attorney called before I had even finished my coffee.
His voice was calm, but there was something different in it this time. More serious. More certain.
"The lender has finished its preliminary review," he said. "They found more than the signature issue."
I sat down at the kitchen table.
"What did they find?"
"A pattern of transfers," he replied. "Money moving from accounts you controlled into accounts connected to Luke and Maya. Some were disguised as household expenses. Others were labeled as loans."
My stomach tightened.
For months, I had thought I was helping Luke build our future. Groceries. Bills. Deposits. Repairs. Insurance. Every little expense had seemed normal when it stood alone.
Together, they told a completely different story.
"How much are we talking about?" I asked.
"Enough that I strongly recommend you stop thinking of this as a breakup dispute," my attorney said. "This is becoming a financial investigation."
I stared through the window at the townhouse I had paid for, the place where Maya had once felt like family.
"What happens now?"
"We trace every dollar. And we make sure Luke cannot move anything else."
After the call ended, I opened my laptop.
I downloaded years of bank statements, credit-card records, payment confirmations, and emails. I created folders for everything. I stopped trying to protect Luke from the consequences of his own choices.
Then I found something I had never noticed before.
A recurring payment had been leaving my joint account every month for almost a year.
The description was vague, but the destination account was familiar.
It belonged to Maya.
I clicked through the oldest transaction.
Then the next one.
Then another.
Thousands of dollars had quietly moved into her account while she was living in my townhouse rent-free and telling me she was struggling to get back on her feet.
I felt the last piece of doubt disappear.
This was not one terrible decision.
It was a system.
Luke had built a life with Maya using money he had convinced me to believe was ours.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Luke appeared on the screen.
"We need to talk before you make this worse."
I almost laughed.
He still thought he was the one who got to decide when things were over.
I typed one sentence.
"You should have thought about that before you made me part of your plan without my permission."
I sent it and turned the phone face down.
For the first time, I was not waiting for Luke to explain himself.
I was waiting for the truth to finish catching up with him.
