Elena Vitiello POV

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

The sound echoed through the underground chamber.

Everyone froze.

Every weapon.

Every movement.

Every breath.

Stopped.

"What is that?" Marco asked.

For the first time all night...

Lorenzo smiled like a man who had already won.

"My last contingency plan."

"Bomb," Dante growled.

"Very good."

"How long?"

"Not long enough."

Panic exploded across the room.

"Find it!"

"Move!"

"Search everything!"

Agents scattered immediately.

Flashlights cut through the darkness.

The beeping continued.

Steady.

Patient.

Terrifying.

My heart hammered against my ribs.

"Lorenzo."

I stepped forward.

"Stop it."

"No."

"People will die."

"People always die."

"You monster."

"I've been called worse."

His calmness made me sick.

"Why?"

"Because empires shouldn't survive me."

"Neither should legacies."

"If I fall..."

"Everything falls."

Dante grabbed Lorenzo by the collar.

Hard.

Violently.

"Where is it?"

"You won't shoot me."

"Try me."

"No."

"You need me alive."

Dante looked like he wanted to break every bone in Lorenzo's body.

Honestly...

So did I.

"Boss!"

Marco's voice echoed through the chamber.

"Found something!"

Everyone rushed toward him.

An old steel door.

Hidden behind crates.

Half concealed by stone.

"The sound is louder here."

"Open it," Dante ordered.

"Stand back."

An agent kicked the lock.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The door burst inward.

And everyone froze.

The room beyond wasn't a bomb room.

It was an archive.

Shelves.

Boxes.

Documents.

Decades of documents.

"What the hell is this?"

"Lorenzo's insurance policy," my mother whispered.

The beeping continued.

Closer now.

Marco followed the sound.

Then stopped.

"Boss..."

"What?"

"It's not a bomb."

"What?"

"It's a laptop."

The entire room went silent.

"A laptop?"

"Yes."

"Then what's beeping?"

"A countdown."

"Countdown to what?"

The screen glowed brightly.

Red numbers.

02:13.

Two minutes.

Thirteen seconds.

And dropping.

"Oh no," one of the agents whispered.

"What?"

The analyst rushed forward.

His face immediately turned pale.

"Boss."

"What?"

"It's connected to offshore servers."

"So?"

"So when this reaches zero..."

"Every file Lorenzo owns gets released."

The room froze.

"Every file?"

"Everything."

"Politicians."

"Judges."

"Cartels."

"Organized crime."

"Federal agencies."

"Everyone."

Even Dante looked shocked.

"How much data?"

"Enough to collapse governments."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

"Can you stop it?"

"Trying."

The analyst immediately started typing.

The countdown continued.

01:48.

01:47.

01:46.

"Damn it."

"What's wrong?"

"Encryption."

"Military-grade."

"We're running out of time."

Lorenzo started laughing.

Actually laughing.

"Do you understand now?"

"If I lose..."

"Everyone loses."

"You're insane."

"Possibly."

"Definitely," Marco corrected.

"Fair."

The countdown continued.

01:21.

01:20.

01:19.

"Can we destroy it?" I asked.

"No."

"Why not?"

"Dead-man switch."

"Destroying it triggers the upload instantly."

Wonderful.

Just wonderful.

"Password?" Dante asked.

"What?"

"Every system has one."

"Then figure it out."

The analyst shook his head.

"Could be anything."

"Not anything," my mother suddenly said.

Everyone turned.

"What?"

"Lorenzo loved patterns."

"Obsessed with them."

"Birthdays."

"Anniversaries."

"Names."

"Family history."

"Everything had meaning."

The countdown hit one minute.

Exactly one minute.

Panic spread visibly.

"Try dates."

"Which dates?"

"His birthday."

"Already failed."

"Wedding anniversary."

"Failed."

"Children?"

"Failed."

"Damn it."

The seconds vanished.

Fast.

Too fast.

"Thirty seconds!"

The analyst looked desperate.

"Nothing works."

"Think," my mother whispered.

"Think."

"What matters most to Lorenzo?"

Silence.

Then suddenly...

I understood.

Not power.

Not money.

Not control.

Something else.

"Family."

Everyone looked at me.

"What?"

"Not real family."

"Ownership."

"Legacy."

"Blood."

"That's all he ever cared about."

The room froze.

"Blood."

My eyes widened.

"Try Elena."

"What?"

"My birthday."

"Why?"

"Because I'm his obsession."

"His legacy."

"His proof."

"Try it."

The analyst immediately typed.

The countdown reached ten seconds.

09.

08.

07.

The room stopped breathing.

06.

05.

"Come on."

04.

03.

The analyst hit enter.

02.

01.

The screen flashed.

Then went black.

Silence.

Complete silence.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then...

ACCESS GRANTED

The words appeared.

The countdown vanished.

The room erupted.

Relief.

Shouting.

Disbelief.

Cheers.

For the first time all night...

Lorenzo looked surprised.

Genuinely surprised.

"Impossible," he whispered.

"No," I said softly.

"You just never realized something."

"What?"

I looked directly into his eyes.

"I was never yours."

For the first time in decades...

Lorenzo Moretti had absolutely nothing to say.

You finished
