The spring festival was only two weeks away, and the leadership committee was already overwhelmed.
Everyone had a job.
Sophie was handling decorations.
Mia was coordinating volunteers.
Ethan was responsible for the stage schedule.
And I had been assigned to organize the student performances.
For the first time, I was constantly surrounded by people who trusted me to handle things.
It felt strange.
But it also felt good.
***
One afternoon, I was sorting performance applications when I heard two familiar voices behind me.
"Are you sure you want to submit this?"
Amber.
I looked up.
She was standing near the doorway with another girl from our class.
The other girl looked nervous.
"I don't know," she whispered.
"Everyone will laugh if I mess up."
Amber sighed.
"Then don't do it."
I stared at her.
This wasn't the Amber I remembered.
There was no mocking smile.
No cruel nickname.
She actually sounded concerned.
"You should perform," I said.
Both girls looked at me.
I smiled.
"If you want to."
The girl nodded slowly.
"I do."
"Then submit it."
Amber looked at me for a moment.
"You've changed."
"So have you."
She gave a small, uncomfortable smile.
"Maybe."

After they left, Ethan walked over.
"You really meant that?"
"Of course."
"Even for her?"
I knew exactly who he meant.
I shrugged.
"I don't need to punish people forever just because they hurt me once."
Ethan studied my face.
"That's a pretty mature answer."
"Don't sound so surprised."
He laughed.
"I'm impressed."
I smiled.
Then his expression became serious.
"But forgiveness doesn't mean forgetting."
"I know."
I looked back at the applications.
"I just don't want what happened to control who I become."

The next morning, the school was buzzing.
Someone had posted an anonymous message on the student forum.
It was about me.
"Aurora only got into the leadership committee because teachers felt sorry for her after Cole slapped her."
My stomach dropped.
Sophie grabbed her phone.
"Who posted this?"
Mia's face tightened.
"There are already dozens of comments."
I took the phone from her.
The comments were getting worse.
Some people defended me.
Others questioned whether I had exaggerated everything.
One person even wrote that I had probably provoked Cole.
My fingers went cold.
For a few seconds, the old feeling returned.
That same helplessness.
That same urge to disappear.
Then I took a breath.
"I'm not hiding."
Sophie looked at me.
"What are you going to do?"
"Tell the truth."

By lunchtime, the principal had called me into the office.
Cole was already there.
So was Amber.
My heart sank.
The principal placed a printed copy of the anonymous post on the desk.
"We need to understand what happened."
I nodded.
"Okay."
Cole spoke first.
"Aurora didn't make anything up."
I looked at him.
He continued.
"I slapped her. In front of everyone."
The principal's expression remained serious.
"And why?"
Cole looked down.
"Because I lost my temper."
Amber suddenly spoke.
"That's not the whole story."
Everyone turned toward her.
She swallowed.
"I bullied Aurora for months before that."
Silence filled the room.
"I called her names," Amber continued.
"I made fun of the way she dressed. I embarrassed her in front of everyone."
Her voice became quieter.
"And when she finally snapped, I acted like she was the problem."
Cole closed his eyes briefly.
Amber looked at me.
"I'm not saying what happened was your fault."
"It wasn't."
"I know."
Her eyes lowered.
"I'm saying I played a part in creating that situation, and I'm sorry."
I didn't know what to say.
Not because I didn't believe her.
Because I had never expected to hear those words from her.
***
The principal turned to me.
"Aurora, would you like the school to take disciplinary action regarding the anonymous post?"
I thought carefully.
"Yes, if you can find who posted it."
The principal nodded.
"We will investigate."
Then I added,
"But I don't want Amber punished again for what happened between us."
Amber's eyes widened.
I looked at her.
"She already apologized."
The principal nodded.
"Understood."

When we left the office, Amber stopped me in the hallway.
"Why did you do that?"
"Do what?"
"Defend me."
I shrugged.
"Because I don't want to become the kind of person who enjoys watching someone else suffer."
Amber stared at me.
"I really did hurt you."
"You did."
She flinched.
I didn't soften the truth.
"But you admitted it. That matters."
Her eyes became glossy.
"I wish I could undo it."
"You can't."
She nodded.
"I know."
"But you can make sure you never do it again."
Amber wiped her eyes.
"I'll try."
"Good."
Then I walked away.
***
Cole was waiting near the stairs.
He had heard everything.
"You didn't have to defend her," he said.
"I know."
"Why did you?"
I looked at him.
"Because I'm done letting anger make decisions for me."
He went quiet.
Then he said something I never expected.
"I'm proud of you."
I smiled faintly.
"You don't get to be proud of me."
His expression froze.
I immediately regretted how harsh it sounded.
But I continued.
"Not because you're a bad person."
"Because I don't need your approval anymore."
Cole looked down.
"Right."
I started walking away.
Then he called my name.
"Aurora."
I turned.
"Thank you for giving me the chance to apologize."
I nodded.
"You're welcome."

That evening, I checked the student forum again.
The anonymous post was gone.
The school had removed it.
There was also a new message from the leadership committee.
Spring Festival preparations were officially underway.
I smiled.
A year ago, my entire world had revolved around one person.
Now, I had a team.
A future.
A life that kept moving whether Cole was in it or not.
And for the first time, I understood something important.
Walking away from someone didn't mean you had to carry hatred with you.
Sometimes the strongest thing you could do was let go of the anger too.
Not for them.
For yourself.
