The spring festival arrived with clear skies and a warm breeze.
The school courtyard was filled with colorful decorations, food stalls, music, and hundreds of students.
For weeks, everyone had worked toward this day.
And somehow, everything had come together.
***
I stood backstage with the leadership committee, checking the final schedule one last time.
"Everything's ready," Ethan said.
I looked at him.
"You're sure?"
"Positive."
Sophie grinned.
"If anything goes wrong, we're blaming Ethan."
He laughed.
"Why me?"
"Because you're the most responsible."
"That makes no sense."
I laughed with them.
A year ago, I never would have imagined myself standing here.
Surrounded by friends.
Confident.
Happy.
Without needing Cole beside me.
***
When the opening ceremony began, I walked onto the stage.
The crowd erupted into applause.
I looked out over the sea of familiar faces.
For one brief moment, my eyes landed on Cole.
He was standing near the back.
He wasn't with Amber.
He wasn't trying to get my attention.
He simply smiled.
I smiled back.
Then I turned toward the audience and began speaking.
"Welcome to this year's spring festival."
My voice didn't shake.
I wasn't nervous.
I wasn't thinking about the past.
I was simply enjoying the moment.
***
The festival went perfectly.
Students performed on stage.
Teachers joined the games.
Sophie nearly destroyed an entire dessert table.
Ethan spent half the afternoon fixing things that weren't actually broken.
And I laughed until my stomach hurt.
Near sunset, I stepped away from the crowd for some fresh air.
The courtyard lights had just turned on.
Cole walked toward me.
He stopped several feet away.
"You did great today."
"Thank you."
"You looked happy."
I smiled.
"I am."
He nodded.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out the old necklace.
I recognized it immediately.
"I thought you might want this back," he said.
I looked at it.
"You kept it?"
"Yeah."
He held it out.
"I don't want it anymore."
I took the necklace from him.
"Thank you."
He gave me a small smile.
"I think this is where I finally let you go."
My fingers tightened around the necklace.
"Cole..."
"It's okay."
He looked toward the festival lights.
"You taught me something."
"What?"
"That loving someone doesn't mean you're entitled to them."
I went quiet.
"And hurting someone isn't something you can erase just because you apologize afterward."
His voice was calm.
"I wish I'd understood that sooner."
"I do too."
He nodded.
"But I'm glad you walked away."
I looked at him in surprise.
"Why?"
"Because you're finally yourself."
A soft smile touched my lips.
"Maybe I always was."
"Maybe."
He stepped back.
"Take care, Aurora."
"You too, Cole."
He walked away.
This time, I didn't watch him disappear.
I turned around and went back to my friends.
***
Ethan was waiting near the food stalls.
"Everything okay?"
"Yeah."
"You look like you just finished a chapter."
I smiled.
"I think I did."
He held out a cup of lemonade.
"Then let's start a new one."
I took the cup.
"Coffee tomorrow?"
His eyebrows lifted.
"Is that a yes?"
"It's a definite yes."
He smiled.
"Good."
***
That night, after the festival ended, I returned home and placed the necklace inside a small box.
I didn't keep it because I wanted Cole back.
I kept it because it belonged to a younger version of me.
The girl who had loved someone with her entire heart.
The girl who had followed him for nine years.
The girl who had believed one day he would finally choose her.
She hadn't been foolish.
She had simply been young.
And she deserved compassion too.
I closed the box and put it away.
Then I opened my curtains.
The night sky stretched endlessly above me.
For the first time in years, I wasn't wondering where Cole was.
I wasn't wondering who he was talking to.
I wasn't wondering whether he missed me.
I wasn't waiting for him to choose me.
Because I had already chosen myself.
***
The next morning, my phone buzzed.
It was Ethan.
"Coffee at ten?"
I smiled as I typed my reply.
"I'll be there."
I put my phone down and looked at myself in the mirror.
No tears.
No heartbreak.
No need to pretend I was okay.
I really was okay.
I had spent years believing that walking away from Cole meant losing the person I loved most.
Instead, walking away had given me something far more important.
My peace.
My confidence.
My future.
And most importantly, myself.
Sometimes the person you think you cannot live without is simply the person you need to live without.
Sometimes one painful moment is enough to show you what years of love had hidden.
And sometimes, the bravest thing you can do isn't staying.
It's walking away forever.
I smiled at my reflection.
For the first time, I wasn't someone's princess.
I wasn't someone's childhood friend.
I wasn't the girl chasing after Cole.
I was Aurora.
And my story was finally mine.
