By the time Atlas reached the southern border, the sky had already turned dark.
Snow covered the road ahead, but he barely noticed the cold.
His entire mind was fixed on one thing.
Elena.
His daughter.
And the possibility that he had already lost them both.
“How far ahead is the Pine Ridge transport?”
The driver checked the tracker.
“We don't have a confirmed location. The transfer was registered, but the vehicle left before we could intercept it.”
Atlas's jaw tightened.
“Find it.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
His inner wolf paced restlessly beneath his skin.
For three years, that wolf had treated Elena as its one true mate.
Even after their chosen bond had been dissolved, the instinct had never completely disappeared.
Now it felt like something inside him was being torn apart.
Atlas closed his eyes.
For the first time, he allowed himself to remember everything Elena had endured.
The coffee accusation.
The stairs.
The claw marks.
Every time Mara had cried and he had immediately believed her.
Every time Elena had asked him to choose her.
And every time he had told her to understand.
Then came the pool.
His own hand striking her.
Her body falling into the freezing water.
His order to keep her there.
Atlas opened his eyes.
“Stop the car.”
The driver immediately pulled over.
Atlas stepped outside into the snow.
His breathing came out in white clouds.
He looked toward the darkness ahead.
“I did this.”
The guard beside him lowered his head.
Atlas's voice became hoarse.
“She trusted me with her life, and I almost killed her.”
No one answered.
There was nothing anyone could say.
...
At the same time, Elena's vehicle finally reached Pine Ridge.
The pack station was quiet at this hour.
A few guards rushed forward when they saw the medical vehicle arrive.
“Is that Luna Hart?”
“Former Luna,” Elena corrected weakly.
The words still felt strange.
But they also felt freeing.
A female pack doctor approached immediately.
“You need medical care. You shouldn't have traveled so soon after surgery.”
Elena shook her head.
“First, my daughter.”
The doctor looked at the small bundle in her arms.
Her expression softened.
“Bring her inside.”
Elena followed.
For the first time since leaving Blackwood, she stepped into a place where no one looked at her with suspicion.
No one asked why Atlas wasn't beside her.
No one asked what Mara had done.
No one told her to forgive.
They simply helped.
Elena sat on the examination bed while the doctor checked her injuries.
“You lost a dangerous amount of blood.”
“I know.”
“And you shouldn't have left the hospital this early.”
Elena looked down.
“I had to leave.”
The doctor studied her face.
“From Blackwood?”
Elena nodded.
“I don't want to go back.”
The doctor didn't ask why.
She simply covered Elena with a warm blanket.
“Then you don't have to.”
Those four words nearly broke her.
Elena turned her face away as tears slipped down her cheeks.
No one had said that to her in years.
You don't have to.
She had spent so long believing she owed everyone an explanation.
Now someone was telling her she could simply choose herself.
...
Back in Blackwood, Atlas returned to the pack house just before midnight.
Mara was waiting in the corridor.
Her eyes were red from crying.
“Atlas.”
He stopped.
She immediately moved toward him.
“I was so worried. Where did you go?”
Atlas stared at her.
“Where were you when Elena was in the pool?”
Mara's expression changed.
“I was inside.”
“You knew she was pregnant.”
“Of course I knew.”
“You knew she was already near her term.”
Mara swallowed.
“Yes.”
Atlas's voice was dangerously quiet.
“Then why didn't you stop me?”
She froze.
“I tried.”
“No.”
Atlas took one step closer.
“You didn't.”
Mara's eyes filled with tears.
“Atlas, I was afraid of making you angry.”
He looked at her without emotion.
“You were never afraid of making me angry.”
Mara's face went pale.
“You knew exactly what you were doing.”
She shook her head.
“I would never want Elena to get hurt.”
“Then why did you throw the token into the pool?”
Silence.
Atlas watched her carefully.
Mara's lips parted, but no words came out.
For the first time, he saw something he had refused to see for years.
Fear.
Not fear for Elena.
Fear of being exposed.
His wolf growled.
“Tell me the truth.”
Mara stepped backward.
“Atlas…”
“Tell me.”
She began to cry.
But Atlas no longer moved toward her to comfort her.
He simply stood there.
Waiting.
...
At Pine Ridge, Elena lay in a quiet room with her daughter beside her.
She reached out and touched the tiny pup's forehead.
“We're safe now.”
Her daughter made a faint sound in her sleep.
Elena smiled through her tears.
She didn't know what the future would bring.
She didn't know whether she could ever trust another wolf again.
But she knew one thing.
She would build a life where her daughter never had to wonder whether she was wanted.
And somewhere far away, Atlas finally understood that losing Elena had never been his greatest punishment.
His greatest punishment would be living with the knowledge that when she needed him most, he had chosen someone else.
This time, there would be no second chance waiting for him.
