The package sat unopened on the kitchen counter for almost an hour.
My mother wanted to burn it.
My father wanted to hand it directly to the police.
Thayer wanted to know whether I was ready to hear what was on it.
I was not.
But fear had controlled enough of my life.
I picked up the flash drive.
"We listen once," I said. "Then we give it to the investigators."
Thayer connected it to an isolated laptop.
The first file was the recording Gina had made from beneath the bed.
My own voice filled the room.
Soft.
Private.
Trusting.
I wanted to disappear.
Thayer closed the laptop halfway.
"We can stop."
"No."
I forced myself to keep listening.
The recording ended with Gina's muffled laugh and Bastian telling her to stay quiet.
Then a second file began.
This one had been recorded later.
Bastian and Gina were arguing.
"You said she would leave after the first prank," Gina snapped.
"She always forgives me," Bastian replied. "She'll complain, call my parents, and then calm down."
"And if she doesn't?"
"She will. Meredith doesn't know how to walk away from me."
My stomach turned.
Thayer's hand closed over mine.
The recording continued.
Gina laughed.
"Once you're married, she'll have no choice. Her family already invested too much in the Wilsons."
"Exactly," Bastian said. "After the wedding, she'll stop acting difficult."
I stared at the screen.
That was the rest.
Not intimacy.
Not scandal.
Proof that Bastian had believed marriage would trap me.
The note had threatened to humiliate me.
Instead, the recording exposed him.
"She miscalculated," my father said.
"No," I replied. "She thinks I will still be ashamed."
Thayer looked at me carefully.
"Are you?"
"Yes."
The answer came easily.
"But not enough to protect them anymore."
We sent copies to the police, the Wilson family attorneys, and our legal team.
By afternoon, the threat had become evidence in an extortion case.
Mrs. Wilson called me in tears.
"I am so sorry," she said. "We thought he was immature. We did not know he was cruel."
"You do not have to apologize for him."
"We raised him."
"And you tried to hold him accountable."
Her silence was heavy.
"Will you testify if this goes to court?" she asked.
"Yes."
The word surprised both of us.
An hour later, the recording leaked online.
Only the second file.
The part where Bastian described how easily he could control me.
Someone had removed every intimate detail and released only his confession.
Public opinion changed overnight.
The same people who had called me cold now called him manipulative.
The same sites that had mocked my engagement to Thayer began praising my escape.
I hated how quickly cruelty became entertainment.
But I refused to hide.
That evening, I released a statement.
"The recording was made without my consent. I will not discuss the private content. I will confirm that the public portion accurately reflects the way I was treated. No woman should be expected to accept humiliation in exchange for love."
Thayer read the statement twice.
"It is strong," he said.
"You mean careful."
"I mean strong."
He stood beside me on the balcony while city lights came alive below.
"You do not have to keep proving you are unaffected," he said.
"I'm not unaffected."
"Then stop standing like you are waiting for another attack."
I looked at him.
"I don't know how."
"You could start by letting someone stand with you."
The tenderness in his voice frightened me more than Bastian's anger ever had.
I had understood Bastian's cruelty by then.
Thayer's patience was harder to survive.
"This engagement is still temporary," I reminded him.
"I know."
"You keep acting as if it isn't."
"I am acting as if you matter regardless of what happens after thirty days."
My throat tightened.
Before I could answer, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen and frowned.
"What is it?"
"Security found Gina's car."
"Where?"
"At the airport."
"So she left the country?"
"No."
His expression hardened.
"The car has been there for two days. Her passport was inside."
A chill moved through me.
"Then where is she?"
Thayer looked toward the dark city.
"That is what the police are trying to find out."
