Three years later, Sonia stood inside a research hangar beneath a ceiling of steel and glass, watching the first full-scale Horizon propulsion prototype come alive. The deep vibration beneath her feet was unlike anything she had ever felt. It wasn't just a machine starting. It was the sound of a dream that had once been abandoned finally breathing again.
Professor Cole stood beside her, older and quieter than he had been when they first met. He watched the monitors as the system stabilized. "You remember what you told me on your first day?" he asked. "You said you wanted to know what was beyond the limits."
Sonia smiled. "I still do."
The test sequence began. Numbers climbed across the screens. For a few seconds, nobody in the room spoke. Then the propulsion system reached its target output and held steady. The entire research team erupted in cheers.
Sonia closed her eyes for a moment. She remembered the girl who had once sat at a graduation dinner believing her entire future had disappeared because someone else had changed a form. She remembered Silas telling her that Bradford was enough. She remembered Rachel laughing about a cruel story that had once sounded like fiction. And she remembered the older version of herself appearing on a screen seven minutes before everything changed.
For years, Sonia had thought that video had saved her life. Now she understood something more important. The video had not created her future. It had simply reminded her that she was allowed to choose one.
That evening, Sonia returned to her apartment and opened the old encrypted folder she had kept since graduation. Inside was the original application evidence, the recordings, the photograph from Project Horizon, and the first video from her future self.
She watched it one final time.
Older Sonia looked exhausted, frightened, and hopeful. "If you're watching this," she said, "then you made it farther than I did. Don't waste another second wondering whether you were selfish for choosing yourself. You weren't. You were finally brave enough to stop asking permission."
Sonia laughed softly through her tears. "I didn't waste it," she whispered. "I promise."
Her phone buzzed with a new message. It was an official invitation to join an international aerospace research program. Sonia read it twice before smiling.
She thought about replying to Silas and Rachel one last time. Not because she needed their approval, an apology, or an explanation. She simply realized that she no longer needed anything from them at all.
She deleted their old conversation.
Then she opened the acceptance letter for the new research program and pressed Confirm.
The next morning, Sonia stood on the observation deck overlooking the Horizon facility. The sky was turning gold as the sun rose beyond the distant mountains. Somewhere below, engineers were preparing another test.
She looked upward.
Once, she had believed someone else had stolen her future. Now she knew they never had the power to do that. They could change an application. They could make cruel choices. They could convince her to doubt herself. But they could never decide what she did after she discovered the truth.
Sonia took a deep breath and smiled.
"I was meant for more," she said quietly.
And this time, she wasn't repeating something her future self had told her.
She was saying it for herself.
