The weeks that followed were quieter than I expected.
The scandal surrounding my family slowly faded from the headlines, but the consequences did not disappear.
Isabela was no longer the golden girl everyone rushed to protect.
My parents had to answer difficult questions about what they had known and when they had known it.
My brother stopped posting about our family altogether.
As for Santiago, he tried several times to contact me through mutual friends.
I never responded.
I had spent too many years wondering why I wasn't enough for him.
I wasn't going to spend another minute asking the same question.
Then, one afternoon, Grandma called me.
She told me my parents wanted to see me.
Why?
They want to apologize.
I was silent for a long moment.
Do you think they mean it?
Grandma sighed.
I think they finally understand that they can no longer pretend nothing happened.
I agreed to meet them.
Not because I wanted things to go back to the way they were.
I knew they never could.
I simply wanted to hear what they had to say.
We met at a quiet restaurant near campus.
When I arrived, my parents were already waiting.
Mom looked older than I remembered.
Dad kept his hands folded on the table.
Neither of them spoke at first.
Finally, Mom looked up.
Alejandra, I'm sorry.
I waited.
We failed you.
Dad's voice was rough.
We kept telling ourselves that we were protecting Isabela.
But somewhere along the way, we stopped seeing you as our daughter.
My chest tightened.
Those were the words I had wanted to hear for years.
But hearing them now didn't magically erase everything.
Why did it take this much for you to see me?
Mom lowered her head.
I don't know.
I nodded slowly.
I wanted to hate you.
For a long time, I thought hating you would make leaving easier.
But I don't hate you anymore.
Dad looked at me.
Does that mean you can come home?
I shook my head.
No.
Mom's eyes filled with tears.
Alejandra...
I held up my hand.
You can be sorry, and I can forgive you.
But forgiveness doesn't mean I have to return to the life that hurt me.
They both fell silent.
For once, nobody argued with me.
Nobody called me selfish.
Nobody compared me to Isabela.
I stood up.
I hope you both find peace.
And I hope Isabela gets the help she needs.
But my life is here now.
Outside the restaurant, the evening air felt lighter.
My phone buzzed.
It was an email from NYU.
My application for an advanced research program had been accepted.
I stared at the screen in disbelief.
A laugh escaped me.
Six months ago, I had thought leaving California meant losing everything.
Instead, leaving had given me the first real chance to discover who I was.
I called Grandma.
I got in.
There was a delighted silence on the other end.
Then Grandma laughed.
I knew you would.
That night, I packed for my next semester.
My suitcase was no longer filled with things I had grabbed while running away from home.
This time, I was packing for a future I had chosen.
Before going to sleep, I opened my old family photo album one last time.
There were years of pictures without me.
Birthdays.
Christmases.
Vacations.
Every photo told the same story.
Isabela in the center.
Everyone else gathered around her.
I used to stare at those pictures and wonder what was wrong with me.
Now I simply closed the album.
Nothing was wrong with me.
I had just been looking for love in a place that refused to give it.
The next morning, I left the album behind.
I didn't need proof of the family I had lost.
I was building something better.
A life where I wouldn't have to compete for a place.
A life where being ordinary was enough.
A life where I would never again beg someone to choose me.
