Sunday morning arrived peacefully.
Warm sunlight poured through the apartment windows as Serenity prepared breakfast.
This time, Zachary joined her in the kitchen before she could finish.
"Good morning," he said.
"Morning," Serenity replied with a smile.
"You're awake early today."
"I'm getting used to it."
She laughed softly.
"Living with me comes with the smell of breakfast every morning."
"I'm beginning to like it."
After breakfast, Serenity picked up her handbag.
"We need a few things for the apartment."
"Would you like to come shopping with me?"
Zachary looked at his weekend schedule.
For the first time in years...
He had nothing important planned.
"Alright," he answered.
"Let's go."
Half an hour later, they arrived at one of Wiltspoon's largest supermarkets.
Serenity grabbed a shopping cart while Zachary quietly followed beside her.
"First," she said.
"Fresh vegetables."
"Then fruit."
"After that we'll see what else we need."
Zachary simply nodded.
Watching Serenity compare prices and carefully select fresh produce was strangely fascinating.
She wasn't buying the cheapest products.
Nor the most expensive.
She simply chose what offered the best quality.
"You're very organized," he commented.
"My sister taught me that every dollar should have a purpose," Serenity replied.
"Saving money doesn't mean living poorly."
"It means spending wisely."
Zachary silently admired her practical thinking.
As they continued shopping, Serenity suddenly stopped.
"Wait here."
Before Zachary could ask why, she disappeared into another aisle.
A minute later she returned carrying a neatly folded navy-blue tie.
"What do you think?" she asked.
"It's nice," Zachary replied.
"Who is it for?"
She smiled.
"You."
"Me?"
"You wear suits every day."
"I noticed your ties are mostly black or gray."
"This color would suit you."
Zachary stared at the tie for a few seconds.
No one had ever bought him something so simple... or so thoughtful.
"Thank you," he said quietly.
"You're welcome."
"Consider it a small wedding gift."
As they reached the checkout counter, an elderly woman struggled to carry several heavy grocery bags.
Without hesitation, Serenity walked over.
"Ma'am, let me help you."
"Oh, dear, thank you," the woman replied gratefully.
Serenity carried the bags all the way to the woman's car.
When she returned, Zachary was watching her.
"You help strangers often," he observed.
"If I can make someone's day a little easier, why not?"
"Kindness doesn't cost anything."
Her words lingered in his mind.
After loading the groceries into the car, they headed home.
On the drive back, Serenity turned on the radio.
A cheerful love song filled the vehicle.
Neither of them spoke.
Yet the silence no longer felt uncomfortable.
It felt... peaceful.
Back at the apartment, they unpacked the groceries together.
While placing dishes inside the cabinet, Serenity accidentally stood on her toes to reach the highest shelf.
"Careful," Zachary said.
Before she lost her balance, he stepped forward and gently steadied her.
For a brief moment...
They stood incredibly close.
Serenity could feel the warmth of his hand around her wrist.
Their eyes met.
"Thank you," she whispered.
"You're welcome."
Neither moved immediately.
The unexpected closeness made both of them strangely aware of each other.
A second later, they quickly stepped apart.
Serenity cleared her throat awkwardly.
"I'll... finish organizing the pantry."
"I'll put these away," Zachary replied, equally awkward.
That evening, they cooked dinner together once again.
This time, there was more conversation.
Serenity told him funny stories about university life.
Zachary shared a few harmless experiences from work.
Neither noticed how naturally the conversation flowed.
Later that night, as Serenity watered the small plants on the balcony, Zachary stepped outside.
"It's a beautiful evening," she said.
"It is."
"You know," Serenity continued,
"When we first met, I thought you were impossible to talk to."
Zachary looked at her with mild curiosity.
"And now?"
She smiled.
"Now I think you're just... quiet."
"There's a difference."
For the first time since they had met...
Zachary smiled openly.
It wasn't forced.
It wasn't polite.
It was genuine.
Serenity blinked in surprise.
"You should smile more often," she said softly.
"It suits you."
Zachary looked away toward the city lights.
"Maybe," he replied.
"If you're around... I will."
Neither of them realized it...
But somewhere between shared meals, grocery shopping, and quiet conversations...
Their marriage of convenience had begun to turn into a genuine friendship.
And friendship...
Was the first step toward love.
