After returning from Paris, life settled into a peaceful rhythm.
Jeremy became a constant presence in Ethan's life.
He attended school events.
Helped with homework.
Spent weekends building model airplanes and playing football.
He never tried to replace the years he had lost.
Instead...
He cherished every new memory they created together.
One evening, Ethan sat between Madeline and Jeremy in the living room.
"Mom," he asked.
"Can I ask something important?"
"Of course," Madeline replied.
"Who is my dad?"
The room became completely silent.
Jeremy lowered his eyes.
He had promised that this moment would belong to Madeline.
She reached for Ethan's little hand.
"Do you remember when I told you everyone deserves to know where they come from?"
"Yes."
"Today... I'm going to tell you."
She looked toward Jeremy.
Their eyes met.
He gave a small nod.
"Ethan..."
"The man you've been calling Mister Jeremy..."
"He's your father."
Ethan blinked several times.
"Really?"
"Yes."
"Then why didn't you tell me before?"
Madeline smiled sadly.
"Because grown-ups sometimes make mistakes."
"Very painful mistakes."
"And I wanted to make sure you learned the truth only when you were old enough to understand it."
Ethan quietly turned toward Jeremy.
"You're... my dad?"
Jeremy's voice trembled.
"Yes."
"I'm your father."
"I'm sorry I wasn't there when you were born."
"Or when you took your first steps."
"Or when you learned your first words."
"But if you'll let me..."
"I'd like to spend the rest of my life making new memories with you."
Ethan stared at him for several seconds.
Then he slowly walked forward.
"Does that mean..."
"I can call you Dad?"
Jeremy's eyes immediately filled with tears.
"Only if you want to."
"Dad!"
Ethan threw himself into Jeremy's arms.
Jeremy hugged him tightly.
Unable to stop crying.
"Thank you..."
"Thank you, son."
Madeline quietly watched them.
The ache she had carried for years finally began to disappear.
Several days later, Meredith's trial officially began.
The courtroom was filled with reporters.
The recovered security footage.
The kidnapping evidence.
The financial records.
Every lie Meredith had told over the years slowly collapsed before the judge.
When asked if she wished to make a final statement, Meredith stood silently.
Her eyes searched the courtroom.
They stopped on Jeremy.
Then on Madeline.
Finally...
On Ethan.
She slowly lowered her head.
"I'm guilty."
"Not just of breaking the law..."
"But of destroying my own family."
"I spent so many years trying to steal someone else's happiness..."
"That I forgot how to find my own."
The courtroom remained silent.
The judge later sentenced Meredith according to the law.
As officers escorted her away, she paused beside Madeline.
"I'm sorry," Meredith whispered.
"I know I don't deserve forgiveness."
Madeline looked at her calmly.
"You're right."
"You don't."
"But carrying hatred for you won't heal me either."
"So today..."
"I let go of my anger."
"Not for your sake."
"For mine."
Meredith closed her eyes.
For the first time in years...
She cried without pretending.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Madeline.
"Ms. Crawford!"
"Do you have anything to say after today's verdict?"
Madeline smiled peacefully.
"Justice isn't revenge."
"Justice is finally allowing yourself to move forward."
Her words appeared on every news channel that evening.
Months passed.
Jeremy and Ethan grew closer with each passing day.
One afternoon, Jeremy received an unexpected invitation.
It was from Madeline.
"Dinner tonight."
"No business."
"No discussions about the past."
"Just family."
Jeremy smiled.
"I'll be there."
That evening, they shared a simple meal together.
No luxury.
No expensive wine.
Just homemade food, laughter, and Ethan's endless stories about school.
After dinner, Ethan yawned loudly.
"I'm sleepy."
"Let's get you to bed," Madeline smiled.
Jeremy tucked Ethan beneath the blanket.
"Goodnight, Dad," Ethan whispered.
"Goodnight, son."
After Ethan fell asleep, Jeremy walked onto the balcony.
Madeline soon joined him.
"Thank you," Jeremy said.
"For trusting me with him."
"He deserves his father."
"And what about you?" Jeremy asked quietly.
"What do you deserve?"
Madeline looked up at the stars.
"Peace."
"I've finally found it."
Jeremy smiled gently.
"Then I'll protect that peace... even if I can never be part of it."
Madeline turned toward him.
For a long moment...
Neither of them spoke.
Then...
She reached for his hand.
Not out of obligation.
Not because of guilt.
But because, after everything they had survived...
She finally believed the man standing beside her would never let her fall again.
