Madeline stared at her lawyer in disbelief.
"The police reopened the case?"
"Yes," he replied.
"Meredith submitted new evidence this morning."
"What kind of evidence?"
"Security footage, witness statements, and a recording that allegedly places you at the scene before the accident."
Madeline's heart sank.
"That's impossible."
"I know," her lawyer said.
"But the police have enough to investigate."
"And until we determine where the evidence came from, you need to be careful."
Madeline slowly sat down.
Three years earlier...
Meredith had been involved in a serious car accident.
Madeline had been nearby that night.
She had stayed with her sister until the ambulance arrived.
But somehow, Meredith had later claimed that Madeline had deliberately caused the crash.
The accusation had eventually disappeared because there wasn't enough evidence.
Now it had returned.
And this time, the evidence looked convincing.
Madeline immediately understood who was behind it.
Meredith.
She knew exactly what Meredith was trying to do.
She wanted Jeremy to believe Madeline was a criminal.
She wanted him to hate her.
And if possible...
She wanted Madeline out of the Whitman family forever.
That evening, Jeremy returned home earlier than usual.
Madeline was waiting in the living room.
"Jeremy."
"I heard."
"Then you already know."
He looked at her coldly.
"Did you cause Meredith's accident?"
"No."
"You're sure?"
"I'm absolutely sure."
Jeremy studied her face.
"The evidence says otherwise."
"The evidence is fake."
"That's convenient."
Madeline's heart sank.
"You believe her?"
"I don't know what to believe."
"Then investigate before judging me."
Jeremy looked away.
"Meredith wouldn't lie about something like this."
Madeline almost laughed from disbelief.
"You really trust her that much?"
"Yes."
The answer was immediate.
Madeline lowered her eyes.
"Then what about me?"
Jeremy remained silent.
"After three months of marriage, you still don't know me at all."
"You think I would intentionally hurt my own sister?"
"I think you've done a lot of things I never understood."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"And you think Meredith is incapable of lying."
"Yes."
Madeline nodded slowly.
"Then there's nothing more for me to say."
She turned away.
Jeremy watched her walk upstairs.
Something about the sadness in her eyes bothered him.
He wanted to believe Meredith.
He had loved her for years.
But another part of him remembered something Madeline had said.
"Investigate before judging me."
He didn't understand why those words stayed in his mind.
The next morning, police officers arrived at the Whitman residence.
"Mrs. Whitman, we need you to come with us for questioning."
Madeline remained calm.
"Do I have a choice?"
"You have the right to an attorney."
Jeremy walked downstairs just as they were preparing to leave.
His eyes widened.
"What's happening?"
"We're taking your wife in for questioning regarding Meredith Crawford's accident."
Jeremy looked at Madeline.
"I'll come with you."
Madeline shook her head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because you don't believe me."
"You shouldn't be involved."
"Madeline..."
"I'll handle it myself."
She walked toward the door.
Before leaving, she looked at him one final time.
"Take care of the baby."
Jeremy froze.
"I'll see you later," she whispered.
The police car drove away.
Jeremy remained standing outside the mansion.
For the first time since their marriage...
He felt something close to fear.
That afternoon, he visited Meredith.
"I want to see the evidence," he said.
Meredith looked surprised.
"Why?"
"Because I need to understand what happened."
"You don't trust me?"
"I'm asking for the truth."
Meredith lowered her head.
"I didn't want to accuse her."
"But the evidence was too clear."
She handed him the documents.
Jeremy carefully examined the photographs.
The footage appeared to show Madeline leaving the accident scene.
The timestamps matched.
The witness statements seemed consistent.
But something felt wrong.
He zoomed in on one photograph.
The image was slightly distorted.
"Who provided this?"
"The police found it."
"Who gave it to them?"
Meredith hesitated.
"I don't know."
Jeremy looked at her.
"You submitted the evidence."
"Only because I wanted justice."
He said nothing.
That evening, Jeremy returned home alone.
Madeline wasn't there.
Her belongings remained in the bedroom.
Her books were still arranged on the shelves.
The tiny gifts she had bought for the baby were still sitting on the dresser.
Jeremy picked up a small white blanket.
His fingers tightened around it.
He remembered the ultrasound image.
His child.
His wife.
And now she was being accused of a serious crime.
He sat down on the edge of the bed.
For the first time, guilt began creeping into his heart.
Maybe he had judged her too quickly.
Maybe he had been wrong.
He immediately called his assistant.
"Investigate the accident."
"Everything."
"Don't rely on the police report."
"I want the original evidence."
"Yes, Mr. Whitman."
Meanwhile...
Madeline sat alone in an interrogation room.
An officer placed the photographs in front of her.
"Were you at the scene?"
"Yes."
"Did you argue with Meredith?"
"Yes."
"Did you touch her vehicle?"
"No."
"Did you cause the accident?"
"No."
The officer studied her.
"Then why does the evidence say otherwise?"
"Because someone wants it to."
"Who?"
Madeline remained silent.
"If I accuse Meredith without proof, you'll think I'm lying."
"So what do you intend to do?"
"Find the truth."
The interrogation continued for hours.
Eventually, Madeline was released pending further investigation.
But when she stepped outside...
She found reporters waiting.
"Mrs. Whitman!"
"Did you really attack your sister?"
"Are you being arrested?"
"Is your pregnancy putting pressure on Jeremy?"
Madeline covered her stomach instinctively.
Cameras flashed around her.
Then a familiar figure appeared.
Meredith.
She was standing across the street.
Tears streamed down her face.
The cameras immediately turned toward her.
"Meredith!"
"Do you forgive your sister?"
Meredith shook her head sadly.
"She's still my sister."
"I don't want to hurt her."
"But I want the truth."
The reporters erupted with questions.
Madeline watched silently.
She finally understood.
Meredith wasn't simply trying to destroy her.
She was building a perfect story.
The innocent sister.
The cruel wife.
The betrayed woman.
And Jeremy was already beginning to believe it.
That night, Madeline returned home exhausted.
Jeremy was waiting in the living room.
"Where were you?" he asked.
"The police released me."
"Did they hurt you?"
"No."
"Good."
Madeline looked at him.
"Do you believe me?"
Jeremy hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Madeline's expression changed.
"I understand."
She walked upstairs.
Jeremy remained downstairs.
He wanted to stop her.
But he didn't know what to say.
Hours later, he stood outside her bedroom door.
He raised his hand to knock.
Then stopped.
Inside, Madeline sat on the floor beside the bed.
She held one hand over her stomach.
"I'm sorry," she whispered to the unborn child.
"Your father still doesn't believe us."
Jeremy heard every word.
Something inside him cracked.
For the first time...
He wondered whether the woman he had hated for months might actually be innocent.
And whether the woman he had loved for years...
Might be the one lying to him.
