Jeremy sat alone in his office long after sunset.
The lights of Glendale shimmered outside his window, but he couldn't focus on them.
His mind remained fixed on Ethan.
"Is he really my son?"
The question refused to leave him.
A knock interrupted his thoughts.
"Come in."
His assistant entered carrying a thick folder.
"Mr. Whitman, we've completed the investigation you requested."
Jeremy immediately stood.
"Tell me everything."
The assistant placed several documents on the desk.
"We obtained hospital records from five years ago."
"They're confidential, but your legal team secured access."
Jeremy quickly opened the file.
Inside was Madeline's maternity record.
His hands began trembling.
"Date of delivery..."
He counted the months silently.
The dates matched perfectly.
There was no longer any doubt.
Ethan had been conceived during their marriage.
"The father's information?"
"Left blank."
"But according to the timeline..."
"There is only one possible biological father."
Jeremy slowly closed the file.
His eyes turned red.
"He's my son..."
"Yes, Mr. Whitman."
Jeremy collapsed into his chair.
For five years...
His son had celebrated birthdays without him.
Taken his first steps without him.
Spoken his first words without him.
Started school without him.
Every precious memory had happened while Jeremy was drowning in regret.
"Cancel tomorrow's schedule."
"Yes, sir."
"I'm going to see Madeline."
Meanwhile...
Madeline tucked Ethan into bed.
"Mom?"
"Yes?"
"The man from yesterday..."
"Do you still love him?"
Madeline smiled sadly.
"No."
"I loved him once."
"Very much."
"But that was a long time ago."
"Then why do you look sad whenever you talk about him?"
She gently kissed Ethan's forehead.
"Because some memories leave scars."
"Even after they stop hurting."
"Will my dad ever come back?"
Madeline froze.
She had always known this question would come.
"Every child deserves to know where they come from."
"One day... I'll tell you everything."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
The next morning...
Jeremy arrived outside the villa once again.
This time, Madeline agreed to meet him.
They sat across from each other in the garden.
Neither of them spoke for several moments.
Finally, Jeremy broke the silence.
"I know the truth."
Madeline looked at him calmly.
"Which truth?"
"Ethan is my son."
She didn't answer.
"I saw the records."
"You had no right."
"I know."
"But I needed to know."
"And now you do."
"What changes?"
Jeremy lowered his head.
"Nothing can erase the past."
"But I want a chance."
"A chance to know my son."
"A chance to make things right."
Madeline looked directly into his eyes.
"Do you remember what you once told me?"
"Yes."
"You said you didn't want our child."
"I regret every word."
"So do I."
"Because I believed you."
"I spent years wondering whether Ethan would ever feel unwanted."
"Every time he asked about his father..."
"I had no answer."
Jeremy's voice cracked.
"I'm sorry."
"I know."
"But apologies don't give Ethan back the father he deserved."
"Then let me become that father now."
"You can't replace five years."
"No."
"But I can spend the rest of my life trying."
Madeline remained silent.
At that moment...
Ethan ran into the garden carrying a toy airplane.
"Mom!"
He suddenly noticed Jeremy.
"Hello, mister."
Jeremy smiled nervously.
"Hello, Ethan."
"Do you like airplanes?"
"Yes!"
"Want to see mine?"
Before Madeline could respond...
Ethan handed Jeremy the toy.
"It flies really high!"
Jeremy accepted it carefully.
His hands shook.
He had never imagined that the first thing his son would give him...
Was trust.
"Thank you," Jeremy whispered.
"You're welcome!"
Ethan smiled brightly.
"Mom says sharing is important."
Jeremy looked toward Madeline.
She quietly looked away.
After a few minutes, Ethan ran back inside.
Jeremy gently placed the toy airplane on the table.
"He's an amazing child."
"I know."
"You raised him well."
"I had to."
"Because I was alone."
Jeremy closed his eyes.
There was nothing he could say to change that truth.
"Madeline..."
"I won't ask you to forgive me today."
"Or tomorrow."
"Maybe not ever."
"But please..."
"Don't stop me from loving him."
Madeline remained quiet for a long time.
Finally she stood.
"Whether Ethan knows the truth..."
"Will be my decision."
"Until then..."
"You're simply Mr. Whitman."
"Nothing more."
Jeremy nodded.
"I'll wait."
"However long it takes."
"I waited twelve years for your love," Madeline replied softly.
"Now it's your turn to wait."
She walked back toward the house.
Jeremy remained sitting alone in the garden.
For the first time...
He understood exactly how she had felt all those years.
Waiting.
Hoping.
Loving someone who never looked back.
As he stood to leave, Ethan's toy airplane was still resting on the table.
Jeremy smiled sadly.
"I'll earn the right to hear you call me Dad someday."
"Even if it takes the rest of my life."
From the upstairs window...
Madeline watched him drive away.
Her heart remained calm.
She no longer loved the man who had broken her.
But fate had brought them together once again.
Whether it was for justice...
Or for redemption...
Only time would decide.
