Emily remained frozen as the elevator doors quietly closed behind her.
Her heart pounded against her chest.
There was no way this could be happening.
The mysterious man she had spent the previous night with was standing only a few feet away, dressed in an expensive charcoal suit, looking every bit the billionaire CEO everyone admired.
"Miss Hart," Dominic repeated calmly.
"Please, have a seat."
Emily forced herself to walk toward the chair opposite his massive desk.
She prayed he couldn't hear how loudly her heart was beating.
"Good morning, Mr. Steele," she managed to say.
"Good morning."
For several seconds, neither of them mentioned what had happened the previous night.
Dominic opened a file containing Emily's resume.
"Bachelor's degree in Business Administration."
"Excellent academic record."
"Three internships with outstanding recommendations."
"Impressive."
Emily smiled politely.
"Thank you, sir."
His expression remained professional, but inside, Dominic couldn't ignore how different she looked.
Last night she had been carefree and full of laughter.
Today she looked composed, intelligent, and determined.
He found both versions equally captivating.
"At Steele Empire," Dominic continued, "professionalism is extremely important."
"I expect confidentiality, punctuality, and dedication from everyone who works here."
"You won't be disappointed," Emily replied confidently.
"I certainly hope not."
He closed the file and stood.
"Come with me."
Emily followed him through the executive floor.
Every employee greeted Dominic with immediate respect.
"Good morning, Mr. Steele."
"Morning, sir."
"Good to see you, Mr. Steele."
His presence commanded attention without him raising his voice.
Emily silently admired his leadership.
He wasn't loud or arrogant.
He simply carried authority naturally.
They stopped outside a modern office connected directly to Dominic's.
"This will be your workspace," he explained.
"You'll manage my schedule, meetings, travel arrangements, and confidential documents."
"Understood."
"Any questions?"
Emily wanted to ask a hundred.
Instead, she shook her head.
"No, sir."
"Good."
"Our first meeting starts in twenty minutes."
After Dominic walked away, Emily collapsed into her chair.
"Unbelievable," she whispered.
"Of all the companies..."
Before she could finish her sentence, another woman entered the office.
"You must be the new secretary."
"I'm Rachel from Human Resources."
"Nice to meet you," Emily replied.
"Welcome to Steele Empire."
"One piece of advice."
"Mr. Steele is demanding, but he's fair."
"Do your job well, and you'll have no problems."
"I'll remember that."
Rachel smiled before leaving.
Emily spent the next hour organizing Dominic's calendar and reviewing company reports.
She quickly realized Steele Empire operated on a completely different level than anywhere she had worked before.
Everything was perfectly organized.
Everything moved with remarkable efficiency.
Just before ten o'clock, Dominic appeared again.
"Conference room."
"Now."
"Yes, sir."
Emily picked up her tablet and followed him.
The boardroom overlooked the entire city.
Several executives were already seated around the table.
"Good morning, everyone," Dominic said.
"Let's begin."
For the next ninety minutes, Emily watched him lead the meeting.
He listened carefully.
Asked direct questions.
Made difficult decisions without hesitation.
She finally understood why Steele Empire had become one of the country's most successful companies.
Dominic wasn't simply wealthy.
He was brilliant.
During the meeting, one executive presented incorrect financial figures.
"Those numbers don't match last quarter's report," Dominic said immediately.
The executive looked surprised.
"I'll verify them."
"Do that," Dominic replied.
Emily quietly checked the digital report on her tablet.
Within seconds she found the mistake.
She hesitated.
Should she interrupt?
Finally, she leaned closer to Dominic.
"Sir," she whispered.
"The updated report is on page thirty-two."
"The printed copies are outdated."
Dominic looked at her briefly.
Then he opened the correct file.
She was right.
"Thank you, Miss Hart," he said.
The meeting continued smoothly.
Several executives exchanged curious looks.
The new secretary had corrected a million-dollar mistake on her very first day.
After the meeting ended, Dominic remained behind.
"Good observation."
"Thank you."
"You saved us considerable embarrassment."
"I was only doing my job."
A faint smile appeared on Dominic's face.
"Exactly."
Back in her office, Emily couldn't help smiling.
Maybe working with him wouldn't be impossible after all.
Meanwhile, Dominic stood inside his office watching through the glass wall.
Marcus, his longtime friend and Chief Operating Officer, walked in.
"You hired someone impressive," Marcus commented.
"She noticed that report faster than anyone else."
"She has potential," Dominic answered.
Marcus folded his arms.
"Is that all she has?"
Dominic looked at him.
"Meaning?"
"You recognized her this morning."
"I saw your face."
Dominic remained silent.
"Last night," Marcus continued carefully.
"Was she...?"
"Yes."
"Interesting."
"Nothing changes," Dominic said firmly.
"She's my employee now."
"Of course."
"And you're absolutely certain you can keep things professional?"
Dominic glanced toward Emily's office again.
"I have to."
The rest of the day passed quickly.
Emily efficiently organized schedules, answered calls, and coordinated meetings.
Every task Dominic assigned was completed ahead of time.
Late that afternoon, she knocked gently on his office door.
"Sir?"
"Come in."
"Here's tomorrow's meeting schedule."
Dominic reviewed it carefully.
"Perfect."
"You've adapted faster than expected."
"I like staying organized."
"I noticed."
For a brief moment, the atmosphere became awkward.
Both remembered the previous night.
Neither mentioned it.
Finally, Dominic broke the silence.
"Miss Hart."
"Yes, sir?"
"Whatever happened before today... stays in the past."
Emily nodded immediately.
"I agree."
"At work, you're my employer."
"And you're my secretary," Dominic finished.
"Exactly."
Their eyes met.
Despite the professional agreement, the undeniable chemistry between them hadn't disappeared.
If anything, pretending nothing had happened only made the tension stronger.
As Emily walked toward the elevator that evening, she quietly sighed.
"This job is going to be much harder than I expected."
Inside his office, Dominic watched the elevator doors close.
For the first time in years, the billionaire CEO found himself distracted.
Not by business.
But by the woman who now worked just outside his office.
