Chapter 9: Separate Room

The mansion had never felt quieter.

Not after Nathaniel's funeral.

Not after my wedding.

Not even after I lost the baby.

Silence had become something alive.

It followed me upstairs.

It waited outside every closed door.

I carried the walnut box back to the guest room.

Not our bedroom.

It had stopped feeling like ours a long time ago.

I locked the door behind me.

The envelope remained unopened.

The missing page remained hidden beneath the velvet lining.

Neither would leave this room tonight.

A soft knock interrupted my thoughts.

"Madame?"

It was Martha.

The oldest housekeeper.

One of the few people who had worked here before Damien inherited the estate.

"Come in," I said.

She entered carrying a neatly folded stack of fresh bed linens.

"I thought you might need these."

"Thank you."

She quietly began changing the bedding.

After several minutes she finally spoke again.

"You've moved into the guest room permanently?"

"Yes."

"Mr. Ashford won't like that."

"He doesn't have to."

Martha glanced at me before lowering her voice.

"People notice things in a house this size."

"The staff are already talking."

"About what?"

"Separate bedrooms usually mean separate lives."

I smiled faintly.

"For once... they're right."

Martha stopped smoothing the duvet.

"Madame..."

"I've watched many marriages inside this family."

"None of them ended quietly."

"I'm not interested in making noise."

"I simply want peace."

"Peace often costs more than war," she whispered.

She finished making the bed and quietly excused herself.

The room fell silent again.

An hour later, footsteps stopped outside my door.

Three measured knocks.

I already knew who it was.

"Vivian."

Damien's voice came through the wood.

"Open the door."

"No."

"We need to talk."

"We've done enough talking."

"No, we've avoided talking."

I closed my eyes.

He wasn't entirely wrong.

But he wasn't ready for the conversations that actually mattered.

"Go back to your room."

"This is our room."

"Not anymore."

Silence.

Then...

"Mother noticed."

"She asked why you weren't sleeping upstairs."

"What did you tell her?"

"That you needed space."

"Good."

"Because I do."

"Vivian..."

"Did you really call your lawyer?"

"Yes."

"Are you serious about the divorce?"

"Completely."

The answer came easier than I expected.

There was another long pause.

"Can I ask you one question?"

"You can ask."

"I may not answer."

"Fair enough."

"When did you stop loving me?"

The question settled heavily between us.

I stared at the closed bedroom door.

Thinking.

Searching.

Finally I answered.

"I didn't stop in one day."

"You removed one piece at a time."

"The day you locked my studio."

"The day you laughed when your mother called me barren."

"The day you believed Colette instead of me."

"The day you slapped me."

"Love doesn't disappear suddenly, Damien."

"It bleeds."

"Slowly."

"Until there's nothing left to save."

No reply came.

Only breathing.

Quiet.

Uneven.

"I never wanted to hurt you," he finally said.

"Intentions don't erase outcomes."

"I know."

"Do you?"

"I'm beginning to."

His voice sounded different tonight.

Not softer.

Simply... uncertain.

"Sleep," I said.

"Tomorrow will be difficult."

"For both of us."

"Goodnight, Vivian."

"Goodnight."

His footsteps slowly faded down the hallway.

I waited another full minute before opening the bedroom door.

The corridor was empty.

Across the hall, the master bedroom door remained open.

For the first time since our marriage...

Damien would sleep alone.

I closed my door again.

Then I walked to the walnut box.

Carefully removing the hidden page.

Moonlight spilled across the paper.

Most of the document contained legal language I had already memorised.

But tonight...

For the first time...

Something caught my attention.

At the very bottom corner.

Half hidden beneath an old fold.

Someone had written four words in blue ink.

Not Nathaniel.

Not a lawyer.

The handwriting belonged to someone else.

If Vivian ever reads this.

My pulse stopped.

I slowly unfolded the final crease.

There was another sentence waiting underneath.

One that had remained hidden for three years.

You finished
