The next day, Cole found me.
There wasn't a trace of an apology on his face, only the weary impatience of a man cleaning up a mess. He slapped a check on the table between us.
"You've dragged this out long enough. This is what you wanted, right? I handled it. No need to wait for dental records. I called in a favor and got it all taken care of."
I stared at the flimsy piece of paper, my stomach clenching.
"Handled it? What does that mean?"
"I donated the body," Cole said, as if discussing a routine transaction. "There's a service that handles these things. They gave a fifty-thousand-dollar stipend for processing. It's all in the check."
He tapped the paper.
"This way, she can at least contribute to medical science."
A chill snaked down my spine.
Jade, standing just behind him, stepped forward.
"Nora, the captain was thinking of you," she chimed in softly. "Donating a body to medical research—it's such a noble act."
Noble?
My mother-in-law had spent her life teaching ethics. She felt guilty picking a flower from the community garden. She had lived with such quiet dignity.
And in death, her own son had sold her off like a piece of meat for fifty thousand dollars.
Bile rose in my throat.
I pushed the check back across the table. My voice was unnervingly calm.
"Cole, this is the money you got for selling your own mother."
I had to give him one last chance to hear it.
He took it as a final provocation.
"Are you fucking done?" He grabbed my wrist, his grip bruising. "Still trying to claim my mother's dead over a check?"
I met his gaze.
"Get her back."
"Psycho!"
He threw my hand back, snatched the check, and ripped it to shreds, flinging the pieces in my face.
"My mother is on vacation in the Caribbean! Her phone's location proves it!" he roared, his eyes wild.
The scraps of paper fluttered down around me.
He stared at me, his eyes bloodshot with rage.
"I'll grant your wish. We're getting a divorce. My lawyer will be in touch, Nora. Then you'll find out what happens when you cross me."
