After completing the cremation procedures, I carried Dylan's urn out of the funeral home.
Tiffany lunged at me like a madwoman and tried to snatch it away.
"Give my son back!" she shrieked.
I stepped aside coldly, causing her to stumble to the ground.
"Didn't you say you wanted him to rest in peace? Now he finally can."
Her face twisted with hatred.
"Celeste! You planned this from the beginning!"
"Planned what?" I asked innocently. "Everything was done according to the law. Unless... Dylan wasn't actually dead?"
The three of them instantly fell silent.
Not one of them dared answer.
Just then, several police officers walked into the funeral home.
"Who's Celeste Harper?"
"I am," I replied calmly.
One officer looked at me before turning toward Mandy.
"We received an anonymous report claiming a hospital doctor issued a false death certificate. We'd like everyone involved to cooperate with our investigation."
Mandy's face instantly lost all color.
"Officer, there must be some misunderstanding," she stammered.
"Whether it's a misunderstanding or not will be determined after our investigation," the officer replied.
The police immediately collected Dylan's medical records and requested the hospital surveillance footage.
I quietly watched Mandy trembling.
She had probably never imagined that the fake death certificate she'd written would become the evidence burying her career.
Back at the hospital, the investigation quickly uncovered numerous inconsistencies.
Dylan's CT scans belonged to another patient.
The liver cancer diagnosis had never been verified by the pathology department.
Even the signature on the final report had been forged.
Within hours, Mandy was suspended from work pending investigation.
Watching the announcement posted by the hospital, I couldn't help smiling.
This was only the beginning.
That evening, one of the friends I had hired to investigate called me.
"Celeste, I found something."
"Go on."
"Dylan secretly borrowed over six million dollars from illegal lenders during the past year. He also purchased fake passports for himself and a woman named Mandy Spears."
My grip tightened around the phone.
Exactly as I remembered.
If I had died in my previous life, those debts would have fallen entirely onto me.
"Anything else?" I asked.
"Yes. The overseas flight they booked was scheduled for tomorrow morning."
I looked at Dylan's urn sitting quietly beside my sofa and let out a cold laugh.
"Looks like they won't be needing those tickets anymore."
