A year later.
I stood on the stage of the Harper Foundation's annual charity gala as applause echoed throughout the hall.
The foundation I had established with my lottery winnings had already funded hundreds of patients who couldn't afford life-saving treatment.
Every smiling face before me reminded me that my second life had finally found its purpose.
After the ceremony, my lawyer walked over with a small envelope.
"Ms. Harper, this came from the prison this morning."
I opened it without much interest.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
It was Mandy's final letter.
"Celeste," she wrote,
"Today Dylan's parents sold their last remaining belongings to repay another portion of the debt. They blame me for everything, while I blame myself every single day. Looking back, I realize the only innocent person we ever hurt was you. If there is another life, I hope you never meet people like us again."
There was no signature.
Only a tear stain at the bottom of the page.
I quietly folded the letter before dropping it into the fireplace beside the lounge.
The paper slowly curled into ashes.
Just like Dylan.
Just like the hatred I had carried for so long.
Walking outside, I breathed in the fresh air.
The sky was brilliantly blue.
My phone rang.
"Ms. Harper, the children's hospital you donated has officially opened today. They're waiting for you to cut the ribbon."
I smiled softly.
"I'll be there in twenty minutes."
As my car disappeared into the bright morning sunlight, I never looked back again.
Some people are given a second chance to seek revenge.
I had already done that.
My real rebirth wasn't the day I returned from death.
It was the day I finally chose to live for myself instead of someone who never deserved me.
The Lovell family's lies had turned to ashes.
My future, however, was only just beginning.
**The End.**
