After that, I did not even know where my body was.
It was too dark, and even as a spirit, I was too afraid to go there.
If Grandma were still here, would she hold me in her arms like she did last time?
Crying and telling me, "Grandma’s here, Grandma’s here."
No, she could not see me like this.
Once was enough.
She could not see me like this a second time.
Grandma wanted me to live in the light, but I had always lived in darkness.
Even in death, I remained in the dark.
……
The phone call left everyone in the living room silent.
My mom was the first to react.
"Who was that?" she asked with a trembling voice.
Zac frowned and immediately called the number back.
The call connected after several rings.
"This is the City Police Department," a calm voice answered.
"Are you Kate's family?"
My dad suddenly stood up.
"Yes, we're her family. What happened?"
The officer paused before speaking again.
"A female body carrying Kate's identification has been found in an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city."
"Please come to the station immediately to assist with the investigation."
The room instantly fell silent.
Nobody spoke for a long time.
Even Gwen's smile froze on her face.
"That's impossible..." my mom whispered.
"She was just throwing a tantrum... She can't be dead..."
But no one answered her.
An hour later, the entire family arrived at the police station.
The officer carefully placed my belongings onto the table.
My damaged phone.
My wallet.
My employee ID.
And a bloodstained piece of clothing.
"These were recovered with the victim," the officer explained.
My mom covered her mouth as tears streamed down her face.
For the first time in years, I saw her cry because of me.
Unfortunately, I could no longer feel anything.
The officer continued, "We also recovered surveillance footage from nearby streets."
"The victim entered the Lincoln residence the night before her death."
"However, no footage shows her leaving through the front gate."
Everyone instinctively looked toward Gwen.
Her expression changed for only a second before returning to normal.
"Maybe Kate climbed over the wall because she didn't want us to know she left," she said softly.
The explanation sounded reasonable.
My parents immediately nodded.
"That's right. Kate has always been rebellious," my dad added.
The officer quietly observed everyone's reactions without saying anything.
"We will continue our investigation," he finally said.
"Until then, nobody in the family is allowed to leave the city."
Outside the station, my mom leaned weakly against the wall.
"Why... Why did this happen?"
Zac lowered his head without speaking.
Even Orion looked unusually pale.
Only Gwen secretly clenched her fists.
She knew better than anyone what had happened that night.
She was the one who had locked me inside the basement.
She was the last person to see me alive.
But she remained perfectly calm.
She gently held my mother's hand.
"Mom, don't be too sad. Kate wouldn't want to see you like this."
My mom burst into tears and hugged Gwen tightly.
"You're all I have left now."
Hearing those words, I slowly lowered my head.
Even after learning that I had died...
The person she chose to comfort was still Gwen.
Not me.
At that moment, another police officer hurried over with a file in his hand.
"Captain, we've recovered additional surveillance footage from the Lincoln residence."
"There's something strange in the basement cameras."
The lead investigator immediately took the file.
His expression gradually became serious.
He slowly looked up at the Lincoln family.
"It seems... this case is far more complicated than we first believed."
