Elinor Frost POV:

I did not sleep that night.

The Tokyo photo stayed burned into my mind like a scar.

Braden on a hotel balcony.

Destany pressed against him.

His hand at her waist.

Her lips at his neck.

Two weeks ago.

Two weeks ago, I had been home, preparing his meals, answering his grandfather's calls, and convincing myself that Braden was only distant because he was busy.

I had been a fool.

By morning, the city outside my window looked gray and tired. Rain streaked down the glass, turning the world blurry. I sat at the kitchen table with untouched tea cooling between my hands.

Mrs. Gable moved quietly around the kitchen, her worried eyes returning to me again and again.

"Mrs. Harmon," she said softly. "You should eat something."

My hand moved to my stomach.

The baby.

No matter how broken I felt, I could not neglect the small life inside me.

"Toast is fine," I whispered.

Mrs. Gable nodded, relief flashing across her face.

Before she could turn away, the front door opened.

The sound of Braden's shoes echoed across the marble floor.

My body went still.

He entered the kitchen moments later, looking as if he had not slept either. His tie was loose, his hair slightly disheveled, and dark circles shadowed his eyes.

For once, he did not look like the untouchable Braden Harmon.

He looked human.

It only made me hate him more.

"We need to talk," he said.

"No, we don't."

His eyes moved to Mrs. Gable.

"Leave us."

Mrs. Gable hesitated.

I looked at her. "It's alright."

It wasn't.

But I would not let him see fear.

When she left, Braden stepped closer.

"Did Destany contact you?"

The question confirmed everything.

My fingers tightened around the cup.

"So you knew."

His jaw flexed.

"She sent something, didn't she?"

"Photos from Tokyo."

Silence.

His silence was worse than any confession.

"Were they real?" I asked.

He looked away.

My heart did not break this time.

It hardened.

"Answer me."

"Yes," he said finally.

One word.

One clean cut.

I nodded slowly.

"Thank you for being honest. It only took you three years."

"Elinor—"

"Don't."

He exhaled harshly.

"It was complicated."

"No," I said. "It was selfish."

"You don't understand what pressure I'm under."

I stared at him.

"You cheated on me because of pressure?"

"That's not what I meant."

"Then say what you mean."

His eyes darkened.

"I never wanted this marriage."

The words landed between us like shattered glass.

I should have been prepared.

I already knew.

Still, hearing it from his mouth stole the air from my lungs.

"I know," I said quietly.

That seemed to unsettle him.

"You know?"

"I have known for a long time."

Braden looked at me as if seeing me properly for the first time.

"Then why did you stay?"

A bitter smile touched my lips.

"Because I loved you."

The kitchen went silent.

Rain tapped against the windows.

Somewhere in the house, a clock ticked.

Braden's expression shifted, but I could no longer read him.

"Loved?" he repeated.

"Past tense," I said.

His face tightened.

"You don't mean that."

"I do."

"You're angry."

"Yes."

"You're hurt."

"Yes."

"Then don't make permanent decisions while emotional."

I stood slowly.

"The divorce papers are already being filed."

For a moment, he did not move.

Then his control cracked.

"You signed them?"

"Yes."

"Without talking to me?"

"You talked enough for both of us when you kissed Destany in front of everyone."

"I told you that was publicity."

"And Tokyo? Was that publicity too?"

His mouth shut.

The silence was answer enough.

My phone buzzed on the table.

Unknown number.

Braden saw it.

So did I.

A message appeared.

"Ask him where he really was when you collapsed."

My pulse slowed.

Not quickened.

Slowed.

A dangerous calm filled me.

I looked at Braden.

"Where were you when I was in the hospital?"

His eyes flickered.

Tiny.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

"At a meeting."

Another message arrived.

A photo.

Braden outside a private lounge.

Destany's hand in his.

Timestamped less than an hour after my collapse.

The cup slipped from my hand and shattered against the floor.

Neither of us moved.

Tea spread across the tiles like a stain.

"You left me in the hospital," I whispered.

"Elinor—"

"You left me alone in the hospital and went to her."

"It wasn't like that."

"It was exactly like that."

My voice broke on the last word, and I hated myself for it.

Braden took a step toward me.

"Listen to me."

"No."

"Destany was hysterical. She thought the scandal would ruin her career."

I stared at him.

"And I was unconscious."

His face paled.

"I knew the doctors had you."

"You knew nothing."

My hand pressed to my stomach beneath the table.

He had no idea.

No idea that while he comforted his mistress, I was lying in a hospital bed carrying his child.

And suddenly, I knew with complete certainty that Guy had been right.

Braden could not know.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever, if I could help it.

The front doorbell rang.

The sharp sound cut through the room.

Braden frowned.

"Are you expecting someone?"

I shook my head.

Mrs. Gable hurried from the hallway to answer it.

A moment later, her voice rose in alarm.

"Miss, you can't just walk in!"

High heels clicked against the marble.

Then Destany Aguilar appeared in the doorway.

She wore a cream coat, red lipstick, and the confident smile of a woman who believed she had already won.

"Sorry," she said sweetly. "I didn't realize wives still lived here after deleting their husbands online."

Braden's face darkened.

"Destany, leave."

Her smile faltered for half a second.

Then she looked at me.

"We need to talk, Elinor."

"No," I said. "We don't."

She tilted her head.

"I think we do. Especially since you keep pretending this marriage matters."

Braden moved between us.

"I said leave."

Destany laughed softly.

"Now you're protecting her? That's new."

Her eyes dropped to my stomach.

It was so quick I almost missed it.

Almost.

A cold shiver ran through me.

Did she know?

Impossible.

Unless someone at the hospital had talked.

Unless she had followed me.

Unless Braden had found out and told her.

My breath caught.

Destany's smile widened.

"You should be careful, Elinor," she said. "Stress isn't good for fragile women."

Braden turned sharply toward her.

"What did you just say?"

Destany blinked innocently.

"Nothing."

But her eyes remained on me.

Cruel.

Knowing.

Possessive.

I forced myself to stand straight.

"Get out of my house."

She laughed.

"Your house? That's adorable."

"Destany," Braden warned.

"No, Braden. I'm tired of being hidden while she plays victim."

She stepped closer.

"You think divorce papers make you powerful? You think deleting photos makes you free? He will never let you go if you have something he wants."

My stomach twisted.

She knew.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

Braden looked between us, confusion sharpening his features.

"What are you talking about?"

Destany's lips curved.

"Ask your wife."

I picked up my phone from the table.

"Mrs. Gable, call security."

"Don't bother," Destany snapped. "I'm leaving."

She turned, then paused at the doorway.

"Enjoy your little victory, Elinor. But remember this. Men like Braden don't love women like you. They use them until something better comes along."

Her gaze flicked once more to my stomach.

"And obstacles are meant to be removed."

Then she walked out.

The house fell into a silence so heavy it felt alive.

Braden turned to me slowly.

"What did she mean?"

My heart pounded.

This was the moment.

The line between truth and survival.

I looked at the man who had broken me again and again.

The man who had left me in a hospital bed.

The man who might use my child to trap me forever.

"I don't know," I lied.

His eyes searched mine.

For once, I was grateful he had spent years teaching me how to hide pain.

Because now, I could hide the truth.

His truth.

My truth.

Our child.

I turned away from him and walked toward the stairs.

"Elinor."

I stopped but did not look back.

"What?"

"Don't file the divorce."

The words were quieter than I expected.

Almost pleading.

Almost afraid.

But fear was not love.

Regret was not loyalty.

And desperation was not redemption.

"Goodbye, Braden," I said.

Then I went upstairs and locked the bedroom door behind me.

For the rest of the day, I sat on the floor with my back against the door, one hand over my stomach, listening to the house breathe around me.

I knew Destany would not stop.

I knew Braden would dig for answers.

And I knew the secret inside me had become the most dangerous thing in the Harmon house.

But as the rain faded and darkness settled over the city, I made one silent promise to the child I had not yet met.

I would protect you.

From him.

From her.

From all of them.

Even if it destroyed me.

You finished
