Adrian Romano stood motionless in the doorway of Elena's bedroom.
The room felt strangely unfamiliar.
Not because the furniture had changed, but because the little details that had quietly filled the space with life were gone.
The lavender plant she watered every morning had disappeared from the windowsill.
The sketchbooks that were always scattered across her desk were nowhere to be seen.
Even the knitted blanket she kept folded at the foot of the bed had vanished.
"Sir?" Michael called from the hallway.
"You asked me to prepare tomorrow's security briefing."
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he stepped farther inside.
The wardrobe doors were open.
Only a handful of expensive evening gowns remained hanging inside.
Everything else had been taken.
"She packed," Adrian murmured.
Michael frowned.
"Mrs. Romano left this morning with one suitcase."
"Why wasn't I informed?"
"She said she was visiting the university."
"No one thought..."
Michael stopped speaking.
Neither of them had imagined she wouldn't come back.
Adrian walked toward the nightstand.
A small picture frame still stood there.
Inside was an old photograph taken four years earlier.
It showed Elena smiling shyly on their wedding day while he stood beside her wearing the same unreadable expression he always carried.
Without realizing it, Adrian picked up the frame.
His thumb brushed across the glass.
"When was the last time I came into this room?" he asked quietly.
Michael searched his memory.
"Months, I think."
The answer unsettled Adrian more than he expected.
He placed the frame back exactly where he had found it.
"Find her."
"Sir?"
"She shouldn't be traveling alone."
"Yes, sir."
Michael immediately contacted the security team.
Within an hour every driver, guard, and estate employee had been questioned.
No one knew where Elena had gone.
The gate cameras showed only one thing.
She had left carrying a single suitcase.
No escort.
No driver.
No destination.
Meanwhile...
Bellridge welcomed Elena with a peaceful sunrise.
She opened the balcony door and smiled as cool sea air drifted into her tiny apartment.
It wasn't luxurious.
The kitchen was barely large enough for one person.
The bedroom held only a simple bed and wooden wardrobe.
But for the first time in years, every choice belonged to her.
She brewed herself coffee and spread university documents across the dining table.
A message from the fellowship coordinator reminded her that orientation would begin the following morning.
"A fresh start," she whispered.
Her phone rang.
The screen displayed an unfamiliar number.
"Hello?"
"Is this Ms. Elena Carter?"
She smiled faintly.
She had registered under her mother's maiden name.
"Yes."
"This is Dr. Harris from Bellridge Medical Center."
"Your blood work arrived this morning."
"Everything looks healthy, but we'd like you to schedule your first prenatal appointment."
Elena instinctively rested a hand over her stomach.
"I'll be there tomorrow afternoon."
After ending the call, she stood quietly by the window.
"You're really here," she whispered softly.
"We're going to be okay."
Back in the city...
Michael returned to Adrian's office carrying a thin folder.
"We've checked the airport."
"Nothing."
"Private terminals?"
"Nothing there either."
"Train stations?"
"Still searching."
Adrian leaned back in his chair.
"She didn't leave without a reason."
"Did something happen recently?" Michael asked carefully.
Adrian's thoughts drifted to yesterday afternoon.
Elena standing quietly in the study.
Those papers.
Her strangely calm expression.
Then Isabella's laughter.
He frowned.
"No."
"Everything was normal."
Michael remained silent.
He had served Adrian for nearly ten years.
He knew when his employer was lying to himself.
That evening, Isabella arrived at Romano Tower carrying two tickets to an exclusive charity banquet.
"Ready?" she asked brightly.
Adrian barely looked up from the reports covering his desk.
"Not tonight."
"You never cancel."
"Something important came up."
"Business?"
"No."
"Then what?"
For reasons he couldn't explain, Adrian answered honestly.
"Elena left."
Isabella blinked in surprise.
"She'll come back."
"She always does."
Those words echoed strangely in Adrian's mind.
Always.
Hadn't he assumed exactly that?
That no matter how busy he became...
No matter how many dinners he missed...
No matter how distant he acted...
Elena would simply remain waiting at home.
Across the country, Elena spent the evening unpacking books onto a small wooden shelf.
Most were research journals.
Others were sketchbooks filled with charcoal drawings she had hidden from everyone in the Romano household.
She opened one.
Inside were dozens of portraits.
Some showed city streets.
Some showed strangers.
Nearly every final page, however, contained sketches of Adrian.
Some sleeping.
Some reading.
Some smiling during moments he never realized she had witnessed.
Elena stared at them for several seconds.
Then quietly closed the sketchbook.
"That chapter is over."
She placed it inside the highest cabinet where it could remain untouched.
The following morning, Adrian's office phone rang.
"Sir," Michael said.
"We've located where Mrs. Romano went after leaving the estate."
Adrian stood immediately.
"Where?"
"She visited Harrison & Cole Law Associates."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Lawyers?"
"Yes."
"Do we know why?"
"No, sir."
"The attorney refuses to discuss confidential clients."
A strange uneasiness settled in Adrian's chest.
For the first time in years...
He felt as though something important had happened without his knowledge.
"Prepare the car," he ordered.
"I'm visiting that law office myself."
Hundreds of miles away, Elena entered Bellridge University carrying a notebook beneath one arm.
Students hurried across the campus lawn.
No one recognized her.
No one whispered her surname.
No one bowed out of fear.
She wasn't Mrs. Romano here.
She was simply Elena Carter.
For the first time in years...
She felt wonderfully ordinary.
She had no idea that, back in the city, the first cracks were beginning to appear in the life she had left behind.
