The rooftop froze in silence.
The masked gunman stood behind Dennis, the barrel of his pistol pressed firmly against the side of his head.
"Drop your weapons," he repeated.
"Or your brother dies."
Detective Mason slowly lowered his firearm, carefully watching every movement.
Theresa's heart remained steady despite the danger.
"Dennis," she said calmly.
"I told you to stay downstairs."
"I couldn't," Dennis answered without taking his eyes off the gunman.
"I've already failed you once."
"I wasn't going to do it again."
Victor Lang laughed despite the blood flowing from his injured hand.
"Touching."
"A family reunion."
"Unfortunately, it ends here."
He bent down and picked up the remote control with his uninjured hand.
"One press..."
"And every explosive inside White Capital detonates."
"You're bluffing," Theresa replied.
"Am I?"
Victor smiled confidently.
"The building contains over four hundred employees."
"How many are you willing to sacrifice?"
Theresa looked directly into his eyes.
"None."
"Then surrender."
"Transfer every voting share of White Capital to me."
"Publicly confess to the fraud."
"Accept responsibility."
"Do that..."
"And everyone lives."
Dennis immediately shouted,
"Don't listen to him!"
"He'll kill us anyway!"
Victor smiled wider.
"Perhaps."
"Perhaps not."
"You'll never know."
At that exact moment, Amelia's voice suddenly came through Detective Mason's earpiece.
"Detective... we've hacked Victor's communication system."
"Keep him talking."
"Bomb squad needs ninety more seconds."
Mason gave the slightest nod.
"Victor," he called.
"You're intelligent."
"Surely you know this won't end well."
"You'll spend the rest of your life in prison."
"Only if you catch me."
"I already won."
"Did you?" Theresa asked quietly.
"Your entire plan depended on secrecy."
"Harold survived long enough to give us the flash drive."
"Jessica confessed."
"Every financial transfer has been traced."
"Your offshore accounts are frozen."
"Your companies are under investigation."
"Even if you escape today..."
"You'll never touch another dollar."
Victor's confident expression flickered for the first time.
"You're lying."
"Check your phone."
Without thinking, Victor reached into his pocket.
The moment he looked at the screen, his face changed.
Every bank account displayed the same message.
ACCOUNT FROZEN.
Every asset.
Every investment.
Every transfer.
Gone.
"Impossible..." he whispered.
"Money leaves a trail," Theresa replied.
"And you underestimated mine."
His anger exploded.
"If I can't have White Capital..."
"No one will!"
He raised the remote.
"Victor!" Mason shouted.
"Don't!"
Victor pressed the button.
Nothing happened.
He stared at the device.
Pressed it again.
Still nothing.
"Looking for this?" Amelia's voice echoed through a nearby police loudspeaker.
"Your detonator frequency was disabled thirty seconds ago."
"The bomb squad just finished cutting the final trigger."
"Every explosive is now safe."
Victor's face turned completely white.
"No..."
"That's impossible..."
"Nothing is impossible," Theresa answered.
"Except escaping justice forever."
Furious, Victor suddenly lunged toward Theresa.
Before he could reach her, Detective Mason tackled him to the ground.
The remote skidded across the rooftop.
At the same instant, Dennis elbowed the masked gunman in the stomach.
The pistol fired harmlessly into the air.
Two tactical officers rushed forward.
Within seconds, the gunman was disarmed and pinned to the concrete.
"Clear!" one officer shouted.
"Suspects secured!"
Victor struggled violently.
"You ruined everything!"
"Everything belonged to me!"
"No," Theresa replied.
"It belonged to the people who built it honestly."
Detective Mason snapped handcuffs onto Victor's wrists.
"Victor Lang," he announced.
"You are under arrest for conspiracy, fraud, attempted murder, terrorism, kidnapping, money laundering, and multiple counts of corporate sabotage."
"You have the right to remain silent."
Victor lowered his head.
For the first time since the nightmare began...
He had nothing left to say.
Three months later...
The courthouse overflowed with reporters.
Jessica Thompson pleaded guilty to assault, unlawful detention, and fraud in exchange for cooperating with prosecutors.
Harold Pierce, after recovering in the hospital, testified against Victor and the remaining members of the criminal network.
His testimony uncovered millions of dollars in additional financial crimes dating back almost five years.
Victor Lang received multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole.
Every stolen dollar was recovered and returned to affected customers.
White Dining Group personally refunded every fraudulent charge along with compensation and public apologies.
Customer trust slowly returned.
Business improved.
More importantly...
Its reputation was rebuilt honestly.
One quiet evening, Theresa and Dennis stood together inside the original restaurant where everything had started.
"Remember the fifty-thousand-dollar bill?" Dennis asked with an embarrassed smile.
"How could I forget?"
"That disaster probably saved the entire company."
"It did," Theresa agreed.
"Sometimes the smallest mistake exposes the biggest corruption."
Dennis looked around the dining room filled with laughing customers.
"Thank you..."
"For believing I could fix this."
Theresa smiled warmly.
"Family isn't about never making mistakes."
"It's about having the courage to correct them."
Dennis nodded.
"I'll never forget that."
Outside, the restaurant's new sign shone brightly beneath the evening lights.
For the first time in a long time...
White Dining Group wasn't built on hidden fees or false appearances.
It was built on honesty.
And this time...
No one would ever mistake integrity for weakness again.
