Julia stood in front of the bedroom mirror, smoothing the fabric of the silver dress Jeff had asked her to wear. It had been hanging untouched in the back of her closet since the previous Christmas party. The elegant satin hugged her figure perfectly, making her feel both beautiful and strangely uncomfortable. She rarely dressed like this anymore. Most days were spent inside the apartment wearing simple sweaters and jeans, but tonight was different.
She fastened a pair of pearl earrings that had belonged to her grandmother before applying light makeup. Looking at her reflection, she almost didn't recognize herself. For a brief moment, she saw the confident young woman who had graduated with honors from art school two years earlier, full of dreams and excitement for the future. That woman seemed like a stranger now.
After taking a deep breath, Julia grabbed her purse and left the apartment. The journey across Manhattan took nearly an hour by subway before she finally emerged onto a street lined with luxury vehicles and towering glass buildings. Merriweather Towers rose high above everything else, its polished exterior glowing beneath the evening lights.
Luxury cars pulled into the circular driveway while men in expensive suits and women in designer gowns stepped onto the red carpet leading toward the grand entrance. Julia suddenly felt completely out of place.
"Invitation, ma'am?" the doorman asked politely.
She nervously showed the digital invitation Jeff had forwarded earlier that afternoon. After checking the guest list, the doorman smiled warmly.
"Welcome to Merriweather Towers, Mrs. Thompson."
Inside, the lobby resembled the entrance to a five-star hotel rather than an office building. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead while live musicians played soft jazz near a marble staircase. Waiters carrying silver trays moved gracefully through the crowd, offering drinks and elegant appetizers.
Julia searched anxiously for Jeff.
She spotted him near the ballroom entrance, laughing with several coworkers. He looked confident, smiling in a way she rarely saw at home.
"You made it," he said after noticing her.
"Traffic?"
"The subway was crowded," Julia answered softly.
Jeff looked her over from head to toe before nodding with approval.
"You look nice."
It wasn't exactly a compliment, but Julia accepted it anyway.
"Stay close tonight," Jeff continued. "Most of the executives will be here. Try not to say anything embarrassing."
The words stung more than she expected.
"I won't."
"Good."
Without another word, Jeff turned back toward his coworkers, leaving Julia standing quietly beside him.
The conversations around her revolved around million-dollar investments, luxury vacations, and business opportunities. She recognized almost no one. Several wives exchanged polite smiles, but most were already engaged in conversations of their own.
Julia wandered toward one of the large windows overlooking the city skyline. The view was breathtaking. Thousands of lights stretched endlessly across Manhattan, reminding her why she had once dreamed of living here.
"Beautiful view, isn't it?"
The unfamiliar voice startled her.
Turning around, she found herself face to face with a woman wearing a navy-blue evening gown.
"I'm Cindy Garza," the woman introduced herself with a friendly smile. "Mr. Merriweather's executive assistant."
"Julia Thompson."
"I know who you are."
Julia looked surprised.
"Jeff talks about me?"
Cindy smiled carefully.
"Not exactly. But your husband works in our finance division."
She paused before adding gently,
"It's nice to finally meet you."
Something about Cindy immediately made Julia feel comfortable.
"This place is incredible," Julia admitted.
"You get used to it after a while."
"I don't think I ever could."
Both women laughed softly.
Across the ballroom, another conversation had just ended.
Braxton Merriweather accepted congratulations from several business partners before politely excusing himself. Although the celebration had been organized to honor the company's newest acquisition, his attention had repeatedly drifted across the room.
Until finally...
He saw her.
The same woman from the Christmas gala.
Silver replaced the crimson gown she had worn months earlier, but her emerald-green eyes remained just as unforgettable.
She stood quietly beside Cindy, smiling politely while listening more than speaking.
There was something refreshingly genuine about her.
Unlike many guests who seemed determined to impress everyone around them.
"Mr. Merriweather?" one investor called.
"One moment," Braxton replied absentmindedly.
His gaze remained fixed on Julia.
"Sir?"
Braxton finally pulled himself back to the present.
"Excuse me," he said politely before making his way through the crowd.
Meanwhile, Jeff accepted another drink from a coworker.
"Congratulations," one man laughed. "Looks like the boss finally noticed you."
"About time," Jeff answered confidently.
"I've worked hard for this company."
Another employee exchanged an uncertain glance but said nothing.
Everyone knew Jeff's reputation.
Late reports.
Missed deadlines.
Endless excuses.
Yet tonight he carried himself as though success belonged to him.
Julia noticed Braxton approaching long before Jeff did.
He moved through the ballroom with effortless confidence, greeting employees by name and shaking hands with guests. Despite being one of the wealthiest men in the country, there was nothing arrogant about the way he carried himself.
People respected him.
Not because they feared him.
Because he had earned it.
"Mr. Thompson," Braxton said calmly after reaching them.
Jeff nearly spilled his drink.
"Mr. Merriweather!"
"Congratulations on attending tonight."
"Thank you, sir."
Braxton's attention shifted toward Julia.
"Mrs. Thompson."
He extended his hand politely.
"I'm Braxton Merriweather."
Julia accepted the handshake.
"It's a pleasure to meet you."
"The pleasure is mine."
For just a second, neither of them spoke.
Braxton couldn't ignore the sadness quietly hidden behind her smile.
Julia couldn't understand why the billionaire CEO seemed so approachable.
"I hope you're enjoying the evening," he said.
"Very much," Julia answered honestly.
"Your building is beautiful."
"Thank you."
"Though I suspect the city looks even better from the windows than from my office."
Braxton laughed softly.
"I'll have to take your word for it."
Jeff interrupted quickly.
"Sir, I wanted to thank you for inviting Julia tonight."
"Of course."
"Family is important."
Braxton looked toward Julia once more before politely excusing himself to greet other guests.
As he walked away, Cindy quietly approached him.
"She's exactly as you remembered, isn't she?"
Braxton gave a small smile.
"Even more."
Across the ballroom, Julia watched him disappear into the crowd.
She couldn't explain why meeting him left such a strange impression.
Perhaps because, unlike nearly everyone else she'd met since moving to New York, he had looked directly into her eyes while speaking.
As though he genuinely wanted to know who she was.
Not simply who her husband happened to be.
Little did Julia realize...
That simple introduction had already begun changing the course of all three of their lives.
