Three months later, spring returned to Gray Harbor.
The snow had disappeared from the mountain paths, and the first wildflowers had begun to bloom along the old borders of Ironwood.
I stood on the hill overlooking the valley, watching the morning sunlight spill across the trees.
For years, I had imagined this place as the ending of my story.
Now I understood.
It had only ever been a chapter.
My name was Evelyn Hart.
I had died once, but the Moon Goddess had given me a second chance.
Not a chance to make Lucien love me again.
Not a chance to win my parents' approval.
Not a chance to reclaim the Luna position.
She had given me a chance to live for myself.
Behind me, footsteps sounded softly against the grass.
I turned and saw Lucien standing several feet away.
He looked different now.
The arrogance I remembered was gone, replaced by exhaustion and regret.
"You came," he said.
"You asked me to."
He held out a small wooden box.
"What is that?" I asked.
"The last thing that belonged to you."
I opened the box.
Inside was the real moonstone bracelet.
For ten years, I had believed that bracelet represented Lucien's promise to me.
Now it only reminded me of everything I had survived.
"I don't want it," I said.
Lucien lowered his eyes.
"I know."
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
"I used to think an apology could make everything right," he said.
"It can't," I replied.
"I know."
His voice was quiet.
"But I am still sorry, Evelyn."
I looked at him.
There was no excuse in his expression.
No demand for forgiveness.
Only regret.
For the first time, I understood that forgiveness did not mean allowing someone back into my life.
"I forgive you," I said.
His eyes widened.
"But I don't want you back."
He nodded slowly.
"I understand."
And somehow, that was enough.
The past could not be repaired.
The dead could not be brought back.
But I no longer needed either of those things.
Lucien turned toward the path.
"Goodbye, Evelyn."
"Goodbye, Lucien."
He walked away without looking back.
This time, I didn't watch him leave.
I watched the sunrise instead.
My parents had already left Gray Harbor.
Vivian had disappeared from pack society after the truth about our past became public.
The Ironwood Pack had also changed.
The council created new laws protecting abandoned wolves and requiring every distress call to be investigated.
No wolf could be ignored simply because helping them was inconvenient.
No family could erase a child from its records just because another child was easier to love.
I stood on the hill and closed my eyes.
For the first time, I felt no anger toward the people who had broken me.
They had taken years from me.
They had taken my trust.
They had even taken my first life.
But they could not take my future.
That evening, I returned to the small home I had built far from Ironwood.
My new family was waiting for me.
My mother opened the door and smiled.
"You're home."
I smiled back.
"I'm home."
She pulled me into a warm embrace.
And I finally understood what home was supposed to feel like.
Safe.
Warm.
Chosen without conditions.
Later that night, I stood beside my bedroom window and looked at the moon.
A soft silver light filled the room.
For a moment, I felt the presence of the Moon Goddess.
I closed my eyes.
"Thank you," I whispered.
Once, I had begged the moon for someone to save me.
Now I understood why she hadn't.
She had given me something greater.
She had given me the strength to save myself.
I opened my eyes and looked at my reflection.
I was not the unwanted daughter.
I was not the rejected mate.
I was not Vivian's replacement.
I was not the girl who had been abandoned in a warehouse.
I was Evelyn.
And my life belonged to me.
The scars of my past would always be part of me.
But scars were not chains.
They were proof that something had tried to destroy me and failed.
I turned away from the window.
For once, there was no Alpha waiting to judge me.
No family waiting to decide whether I was worthy.
No fiancé waiting to choose someone else.
There was only tomorrow.
And tomorrow belonged to me.
I had spent my first life waiting to be chosen.
I spent my second chance learning to choose myself.
And this time, I would never abandon the person who needed me most.
Myself.
I smiled as the first light of dawn entered the room.
My old life was finally behind me.
My new life had already begun.
