I stared at my husband in disbelief.
"I wasn't brought into this game by accident?"
He shook his head.
"No."
The underground laboratory suddenly came alive.
Screens flickered across the walls, displaying countless records of players who had entered the Family of Four instance.
Then my own name appeared.
Not my game name.
My real name.
My accident report.
My hospital records.
My husband's face appeared on another screen.
Liam's.
Penny's.
I couldn't breathe.
"What is this?"
My husband lowered his head.
"The truth."
"You were never an ordinary player. You were the original mother assigned to this family."
I stared at him.
"That's impossible. I have a real family."
"You do."
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
"But the game copied their memories and used them to create you. When your car accident happened, your consciousness became connected to the game."
My hands began trembling.
Suddenly, memories flooded my mind.
A little girl laughing while I tied her hair.
A husband complaining about my obsession with cleanliness.
A kitchen I had cleaned a hundred times.
All those memories felt real.
Because they were real.
The game had taken pieces of my life and used them to make me compatible with the family.
The system appeared before me.
"Final settlement condition unlocked."
"Mother has reached maximum favorability with all family members."
"Final choice: Leave alone, or take the family with you."
I stared at the message.
My husband immediately shook his head.
"Don't choose us."
"Why?"
"Because if you take us, you'll never wake up."
Liam stepped forward.
"Mom, you have a real daughter waiting for you."
Penny wiped her tears.
"You should go home."
I looked at the three of them.
The terrifying demon boy.
The little girl who could crush a player's skull.
The stitched monster who was apparently the final boss.
They had all become my family.
I had cleaned their home, disciplined Liam, bathed Penny, and stitched my husband back together.
Somehow, during those ten days, I had stopped seeing them as monsters.
They were simply people who had been trapped in a horrible place.
"I'm not leaving you behind."
My husband stared at me.
"Honey..."
"You said the game cannot control a family that chooses each other."
I held out my hand.
"Then let's choose each other."
The laboratory began shaking violently.
The system's voice turned distorted.
"Invalid choice."
"Players must return to the real world alone."
"Family members cannot leave the instance."
I smiled.
"Then I'll break the rules."
I picked up a metal chair and smashed the largest control screen.
Glass exploded across the floor.
Every monitor went black.
The system screamed.
"ERROR."
"ERROR."
"FAMILY STRUCTURE COLLAPSE."
My husband suddenly grabbed my hand.
Liam grabbed the other.
Penny wrapped both arms around my waist.
The four of us stood together.
The laboratory cracked apart around us.
Then the system announced one final message.
"Family of Four instance cleared."
"Final rating: SSS."
"All surviving players will be returned to the real world."
"Primary subject consciousness transfer beginning."
Everything went white.
I opened my eyes to the sound of a heart monitor.
Hospital lights blinded me.
Someone was crying beside my bed.
"Mom!"
I turned my head.
My real daughter was holding my hand.
My husband stood beside her, his eyes red from crying.
"You're awake," he whispered.
I smiled weakly.
"Did I miss dinner?"
My daughter burst into tears and hugged me.
For a moment, everything was perfect.
Then I heard a familiar voice behind me.
"Mom?"
I slowly turned around.
Liam was standing beside the hospital door.
Penny stood next to him.
And my stitched husband was smiling quietly behind them.
I froze.
The system had said they couldn't leave.
Yet they were here.
A tiny notification appeared in the corner of my vision.
"Hidden reward unlocked."
"Family members successfully transferred."
"Congratulations, Mother."
I stared at the three of them.
Then I laughed.
I had entered the game thinking I was playing a parenting simulator.
I had survived a horror game.
I had raised a demon, loved a murderous little girl, and sewn the final boss back together with my own hands.
And somehow, I had won.
My daughter tugged on my sleeve.
"Mom, why are you smiling?"
I looked at my family.
"Nothing, sweetheart."
Then I glanced at Liam.
"But you three have one rule in this house."
Liam swallowed.
"What rule?"
I pointed toward the spotless hospital floor.
"Nobody makes a mess."
Penny giggled.
My husband smiled.
Liam sighed in defeat.
And for the first time, the former monsters of the Family of Four laughed like an ordinary family.
The horror game was over.
But my parenting had only just begun.
