The brass key rested on Aria's bedside table all night, glinting whenever moonlight slipped through the curtains.
She barely slept.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the burned hallway from her dreams.
The girl with the red scarf.
The locked corridor.
Someone screaming her name.
By sunrise, Aria had made her decision.
She needed answers.
And those answers were waiting inside the abandoned St. Helena Academy.
The following Saturday, Aria waited until her parents left for a family gathering across town.
"We'll only be gone for a few hours," Eleanor said before kissing her forehead.
"Stay inside, okay?"
"I will," Aria lied.
The moment their car disappeared around the corner, she hurried upstairs.
She packed a flashlight, a bottle of water, a notebook, and the tiny brass key into a small backpack.
"This ends today," she whispered.
St. Helena Academy sat nearly forty minutes outside the city.
The abandoned building was hidden behind overgrown trees and rusted fencing.
Most people avoided it.
Local rumors claimed it was haunted.
As Aria stepped through the broken front gate, an icy breeze swept across the empty courtyard.
Weeds grew through cracked pavement.
Broken classroom windows stared like empty eyes.
"This place..."
Her heartbeat quickened.
"I've been here before."
Not in this life.
But somewhere deep inside her memories.
She carefully entered through a shattered side entrance.
Dust covered everything.
Old lockers lined the hallway.
Several classroom doors hung crookedly from broken hinges.
The silence felt unnatural.
Even the birds outside refused to sing.
Aria pulled the folded paper from her pocket.
"Locker 214."
She followed the faded numbers along the corridor.
198...
201...
208...
Finally...
214.
Unlike the others, Locker 214 remained perfectly intact.
Its dark green paint had faded with age, but the small brass lock remained untouched.
"Here goes..."
Her hands trembled as she inserted the tiny key.
Click.
The lock opened immediately.
Slowly...
She pulled the metal door open.
Inside rested only three objects.
A worn leather journal.
A silver bracelet shaped like intertwined vines.
And an old cassette tape labeled:
"Truth."
Aria carefully removed the journal.
The cover bore no name.
Opening the first page, she found elegant handwriting.
"If you're reading this, then I failed."
"My name is Clara Bennett."
"Everything people believe about the fire is a lie."
Aria's breathing stopped.
She quickly turned the page.
"The fire wasn't an accident."
"Someone planned it."
"Someone wanted every witness gone."
"If they discover this journal before you do... none of us will ever receive justice."
"Justice..."
The word echoed inside Aria's mind.
She continued reading.
"There were five of us who discovered the truth."
"One betrayed us."
"One disappeared."
"One died in the flames."
"One lost her memories."
"And one..."
The next page had been torn out.
"No..." Aria whispered.
"Not again."
Suddenly...
Footsteps echoed somewhere upstairs.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
Aria froze.
"I'm alone... aren't I?"
The footsteps stopped.
Then came another sound.
A metallic scrape.
As though something heavy had been dragged across the floor above.
Every instinct told her to leave.
Instead, curiosity pushed her forward.
She slipped the journal into her backpack before picking up the silver bracelet.
The moment her fingers touched it...
A sharp pain exploded inside her head.
"Ah...!"
Images flashed before her eyes.
A classroom.
Smoke filling the ceiling.
Students running.
Someone shouting:
"Clara, hurry!"
Another voice answered.
"We can't leave her behind!"
Then...
A teenage girl with long black hair.
She turned toward Aria.
"Run!"
The vision disappeared.
Aria staggered backward.
"What was that?"
Before she could recover, another sound echoed through the hallway.
Clap.
Clap.
Clap.
Someone was applauding.
"Impressive."
A man's calm voice drifted from the shadows.
"You found it much sooner than I expected."
Aria spun around.
At the end of the corridor stood a tall man dressed in a dark coat.
His face remained hidden beneath the building's broken roof where sunlight failed to reach.
"Who are you?" Aria demanded.
The man smiled.
"Someone who has spent many years waiting for you."
"Waiting for me?"
"Or perhaps..."
He tilted his head slightly.
"Waiting for the soul that chose your body."
A cold shiver crawled down Aria's spine.
"How do you know about that?"
"Because I watched it happen."
The stranger took one slow step forward.
"Reincarnation isn't as rare as people think."
"Some souls return by fate."
"Others... are sent back."
Aria instinctively stepped backward.
"Stay away from me."
"You misunderstand."
"I'm not your enemy."
"Not yet."
The corridor suddenly trembled.
Chunks of plaster crashed from the ceiling.
"Looks like our time is up," the man said calmly.
"This building has been dying for years."
"Take the journal."
"Protect it."
"And whatever you do..."
"Don't trust the memories inside your own head."
Before Aria could ask another question...
The ceiling collapsed between them.
Dust exploded through the hallway.
When she finally managed to see again...
The mysterious man had vanished.
Only his final words echoed through the ruined academy.
"We're going to meet again very soon, Aria."
"And next time... you'll remember who you really are."
Clutching the journal tightly against her chest, Aria ran toward the broken exit as the old building groaned behind her.
She didn't notice the tiny black camera hidden above Locker 214.
Miles away, inside a luxurious office filled with glowing monitors, someone watched the recording with a satisfied smile.
"She's finally found the journal," the unseen observer murmured.
"Excellent."
"Phase Two can begin."
