Time seemed to stop.
The masked man stood motionless in the shattered window, his silenced pistol aimed directly at Aria's chest.
Broken glass glittered across the floor like frozen stars.
Behind him, smoke continued pouring into the room as alarms echoed throughout the retirement home.
"Get down!" Mrs. Carter screamed.
The gun fired.
Pfft!
The bullet struck the metal bedframe just inches from Aria's shoulder, sending sparks flying.
Acting on pure instinct, Aria threw herself behind the overturned hospital bed.
"Run!" Mrs. Carter shouted.
"Don't let them take you!"
The assassin stepped farther into the room, his movements calm and practiced.
He wasn't rushing.
He knew she had nowhere to escape.
Aria's heart pounded wildly.
"Think!"
"There has to be another way out!"
Her eyes darted across the room until she spotted a bathroom door behind the bed.
Without hesitating, she crawled toward it while another muffled shot echoed behind her.
The mirror above the sink shattered.
Glass rained over her shoulders.
She slammed the bathroom door shut and locked it.
Boom!
The assassin immediately kicked against it.
The old wood groaned.
It wouldn't hold for long.
Searching desperately, Aria noticed a narrow maintenance window above the bathtub.
"Please be open..."
Standing on the edge of the tub, she pushed with all her strength.
The window finally gave way.
Fresh air rushed inside.
Outside was a narrow fire escape.
Without looking back, she climbed through.
Behind her, the bathroom door exploded inward.
The assassin entered just as Aria disappeared onto the metal staircase.
"Target escaping," he spoke calmly into an earpiece.
"Proceed to Phase Three."
Aria raced down the fire escape two steps at a time.
Her hands shook so badly she nearly slipped.
She reached the parking lot just as fire trucks began arriving.
People ran in every direction.
The confusion gave her exactly what she needed.
Cover.
She disappeared into the crowd.
Only after reaching the nearby park did she finally stop to catch her breath.
"Mrs. Carter..."
She looked back toward the smoke rising above the retirement home.
"Please be alive..."
Her phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown Number.
Again.
This time she answered immediately.
"Who are you?"
The familiar distorted voice returned.
"Good."
"You survived."
"Who keeps calling me?"
"Someone trying to keep you alive."
"The people chasing you belong to the Phoenix Foundation."
"They're the successors of Professor Holloway."
Aria froze.
"They're still operating?"
"They never stopped."
"Project Phoenix simply changed names."
"Now they call it Project Echo."
"Echo?"
"Artificial identity reconstruction."
"They no longer transfer memories between people."
"They manufacture entirely new lives."
Aria felt sick.
"So... my memories..."
"Some are yours."
"Some aren't."
"That's why you're unstable."
"Who am I?"
Silence filled the line.
Finally, the voice answered.
"That's exactly what they're afraid you'll discover."
The call ended once more.
Aria stood motionless beneath the trees.
Nothing about her life made sense anymore.
The frightened victim she remembered being...
The strange visions...
The laboratory...
The girl named Elise...
Everything connected somehow.
She just couldn't see how.
Returning home that evening, she found an envelope waiting beneath her bedroom door.
No stamp.
No address.
Only her name written neatly across the front.
"Aria."
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed a modern laboratory.
Standing in the center was Professor Holloway.
Older.
Gray-haired.
But unmistakably alive.
"Impossible..."
"He should be dead."
On the back of the photograph, someone had written:
"Meet me where Phoenix was born."
"Midnight."
"Come alone."
Below the message was another address.
"Raven Hill Research Institute."
At exactly eleven-thirty that night, Aria quietly climbed out of her bedroom window.
She couldn't tell her parents.
Not anymore.
Whoever was pulling the strings seemed to know every move she made.
If Eleanor and David became involved...
They could become targets.
A taxi dropped her outside the abandoned Raven Hill Research Institute shortly before midnight.
Unlike St. Helena Academy, this building looked newer.
Too new.
The lights inside were still on.
"Someone's here..."
She slipped through an unlocked side entrance.
Long white corridors stretched in every direction.
The place smelled of chemicals and disinfectant.
It looked less abandoned than hidden.
Suddenly, a voice echoed through the hallway.
"Right on time."
Aria turned.
The mysterious man from St. Helena Academy stepped into the light.
For the first time, she saw his face clearly.
He looked no older than thirty-five.
Sharp blue eyes.
Dark hair streaked slightly with silver.
There was sadness in his expression.
"You came," he said.
"Who are you?"
"My name is Adrian Cross."
"I helped create Project Phoenix."
Aria's stomach tightened.
"You're one of them."
"I was."
"Now I'm trying to destroy everything we built."
"Why should I believe you?"
Adrian reached into his coat and carefully placed a thick file onto a nearby table.
"Because this belongs to you."
Across the front, large black letters read:
"SUBJECT E-01."
"Classification: Phoenix Prototype."
Hands trembling, Aria slowly opened the file.
The first page contained a photograph.
Not of Elise.
Not of anyone else.
Her.
Taken only weeks after she was born.
Below it, one sentence had been stamped in red ink.
"Original Identity Successfully Erased."
"Replacement Personality Installed."
Aria's vision blurred.
"No..."
"That's impossible."
Adrian looked directly into her eyes.
"Everything you've believed about yourself was designed."
"Your childhood."
"Your fears."
"Even your desire for revenge."
"Someone wrote your life before you ever lived it."
Before Aria could speak, every light inside the facility suddenly shut off.
Emergency sirens began flashing red.
Adrian's expression changed instantly.
"They found us."
"We're out of time."
Heavy footsteps echoed through the corridor.
Not one person.
Dozens.
A calm electronic voice filled the building.
"Containment breach detected."
"Terminate Subject E-01 immediately."
