The icy wind stung Evelyn Harper's cheeks as she hurried through the quiet streets, refusing to look back.
Her heartbeat pounded painfully against her ribs while tears blurred her vision.
She had nearly become another missing person whose story would disappear into tomorrow's newspaper.
Instead, two monsters had saved her.
Or perhaps they were worse than the man they had killed.
She couldn't decide.
By the time she reached her tiny apartment across town, her hands were still shaking.
After locking every door and window twice, she slid down against the wall and buried her face in her knees.
"What were they?" she whispered.
Those glowing black eyes...
The terrifying strength...
The way the dark-haired man had looked at her as though he had known her forever.
None of it made sense.
She barely slept that night.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw his face again.
Not because of fear.
Because of something she couldn't explain.
The next morning, sunlight poured through the apartment window.
Evelyn forced herself out of bed.
Life didn't stop because of one terrifying night.
Bills still had to be paid.
Coffee still had to be served.
Working double shifts at Moonlight Café wasn't glamorous, but it kept a roof over her head.
"Morning, Evie," her manager, Mrs. Collins, greeted with a warm smile.
"You look exhausted."
"Didn't sleep much," Evelyn admitted.
"Long night?"
"Something like that."
She decided not to tell anyone.
Who would believe her?
That she'd watched a man rip another person apart with his bare hands before disappearing into the darkness?
People would think she'd lost her mind.
Meanwhile...
Across the city.
Thaddeus stood inside his penthouse office, staring at the leather wallet resting on his desk.
Evelyn Harper.
Twenty-four years old.
College graduate.
Waitress.
Lives alone.
No surviving family nearby.
"You've read that ID at least fifty times," Ryland laughed while tossing himself onto the sofa.
"You're obsessed already."
"Be quiet," Thaddeus answered.
"You feel it too."
Ryland's grin slowly disappeared.
"Yeah... I do."
"I've never wanted to protect someone this badly."
"Neither have I," Orion admitted as he entered the room carrying several folders.
"I gathered everything we could find about Evelyn Harper."
He placed the files onto the table.
"She's been alone since college.
Works six days a week.
No criminal record.
No supernatural connections.
Completely human."
"Impossible," Ryland muttered.
"Fate wouldn't bind us to an ordinary human."
"Fate rarely explains itself," Orion replied calmly.
Thaddeus opened another file.
"Has anyone else been watching her?"
"Actually... yes."
The room instantly became silent.
"What do you mean?"
Orion spread several surveillance photographs across the desk.
Each one showed Evelyn walking home.
Standing outside the café.
Shopping for groceries.
Someone had been secretly photographing her for weeks.
"Who took these?" Thaddeus asked quietly.
"We don't know yet."
"Find them."
"Already working on it."
Across town...
Evelyn finished serving lunch before stepping outside for a short break.
She wrapped her coat tighter around herself.
Snow continued falling gently.
"Mind if I sit here?"
She looked up.
An elderly woman smiled warmly while holding two cups of coffee.
"Of course."
The stranger sat beside her.
"You seem troubled."
"Do I look that obvious?" Evelyn laughed weakly.
"Only to old women who've lived long enough to recognize lonely hearts."
Evelyn smiled politely.
"Bad dream?"
"More like... a bad night."
"Sometimes destiny arrives wearing frightening clothes."
Evelyn frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"You'll understand soon enough."
Before Evelyn could ask another question, the woman stood.
"Take care of your heart, child.
Someone powerful has already claimed it."
Then she simply walked away.
"That was strange," Evelyn whispered.
Later that evening...
Thaddeus ignored Orion's advice and left the penthouse alone.
He found himself standing across the street from Moonlight Café.
Watching.
Waiting.
He told himself it was only to ensure her safety.
Nothing more.
Hours passed.
Finally, Evelyn stepped outside carrying a small backpack.
She looked exhausted.
As she began walking home, Thaddeus followed from the rooftops, remaining hidden in the darkness.
Halfway through her journey, a black SUV slowly pulled alongside the sidewalk.
Three unfamiliar men stepped out.
"Miss Harper?" one called.
"We'd like to ask you a few questions."
Every instinct inside Evelyn screamed.
She turned and ran.
"Grab her!"
The men chased after her.
Within seconds, one caught her wrist.
"Let me go!" she shouted.
Before anyone could react...
A shadow dropped from the rooftop.
The first man crashed through a brick wall.
The second was thrown across the street.
The third froze in terror.
Thaddeus slowly stepped between Evelyn and the attackers.
His black coat moved with the freezing wind.
His eyes glowed like burning obsidian.
"I warned fate," he said coldly.
"She belongs to us now."
The terrified men fled without looking back.
Evelyn stared at him in complete shock.
"You..."
"Who are you?"
For several seconds neither of them spoke.
Then Thaddeus finally answered.
"The man who intends to keep you alive."
