The Silvercrest Pack had never looked more magnificent. Thousands of glowing lanterns floated above the palace courtyard while silver banners swayed gently beneath the full moon. Music echoed through the grand hall as Alphas, Lunas, warriors, and noble guests gathered for the annual Moon Ascension Festival, a celebration that united the strongest packs across the northern territories.
Standing beside Alpha Kael Draven, Luna Seraphina Ashwood greeted every guest with a warm smile. To everyone watching, they looked like the perfect rulers. Kael was respected as one of the youngest and strongest Alphas in the kingdom, while Seraphina was admired for her intelligence, courage, and unwavering loyalty.
Few people remembered that she had not been born into an Alpha bloodline. Her father had been the Gamma of Silvercrest, and her mother served as the pack's healer. When Kael chose her as his future Luna seven years ago, many nobles questioned his decision. They believed an Alpha deserved someone from a more prestigious family.
Kael had ignored every objection. He had stood before the council and proudly declared that he would marry only the woman his heart had chosen. From that day forward, Seraphina devoted herself completely to him and to the pack they built together.
She trained beside the warriors every morning before sunrise. She learned diplomacy from the elders and spent countless nights helping Kael plan defenses, negotiate alliances, and settle disputes among neighboring packs. Every victory Silvercrest achieved had been earned through their shared sacrifices.
Tonight was supposed to be another celebration of everything they had accomplished together.
"You look beautiful," Kael whispered as he gently squeezed her hand.
Seraphina smiled. "You're only saying that because every noblewoman here keeps staring at you."
Kael laughed softly. "Let them stare. You're the only woman I've ever wanted."
His words warmed her heart just as they always had.
"Promise me," she said quietly, "that no matter what happens in the future, we'll always face it together."
He looked directly into her emerald-green eyes and nodded without hesitation.
"I promise."
Those simple words became the last promise she would ever believe.
A trumpet sounded near the entrance of the ballroom.
"The Moonvale delegation has arrived!" one of the guards announced.
The crowd naturally parted as Alpha Orion Vale entered with several distinguished guests. Walking a few steps behind him was a young woman dressed in an elegant midnight-blue gown decorated with silver embroidery. Her long black hair flowed over her shoulders, and her violet eyes seemed almost to glow beneath the crystal chandeliers.
"Who is she?" Seraphina quietly asked one of the attendants.
"Lady Lyra Evermoon," the attendant answered. "Alpha Orion's niece. She recently returned from the Eastern Kingdoms after completing her studies."
"Thank you," Seraphina replied politely.
She turned toward Kael, intending to continue their conversation.
Instead, she found him completely frozen.
"Kael?"
He didn't respond.
His silver eyes remained locked on the mysterious woman across the ballroom.
His breathing slowed.
His wolf stirred restlessly beneath his skin.
"Kael," Seraphina repeated more firmly.
He barely blinked.
Across the room, Lyra suddenly looked toward him.
The instant their eyes met, an invisible wave swept through the ballroom.
Several wolves instinctively lowered their heads.
The scent of cedar wood mixed with moonflowers filled the air.
An elderly Luna gasped quietly.
"The Moon Goddess..." she whispered.
Seraphina's heart skipped painfully.
She knew exactly what had happened.
Every werewolf feared and respected that moment.
The moment fate revealed true mates.
"No..." she whispered beneath her breath.
Kael slowly released her hand without even realizing he had done so.
The warmth she had held seconds earlier disappeared instantly.
"Mate..." Lyra breathed softly from across the ballroom.
Kael closed his eyes as though fighting against something powerful inside him.
"This can't be happening," he muttered.
The entire hall had fallen silent.
People tried not to stare, but curiosity spread faster than wildfire.
Everyone knew what it meant when an Alpha discovered a fated mate after already having a chosen Luna.
Seraphina forced herself to remain calm despite the storm raging inside her heart.
"Kael," she said quietly. "Let's go home."
He looked at her with guilt written plainly across his face.
"Seraphina..."
"Please."
Without another word, he nodded.
Neither of them spoke during the journey back to Silvercrest Palace.
The carriage remained silent except for the sound of horses galloping across the moonlit road.
When they finally entered their private chambers, Seraphina stood beside the large window overlooking the forest.
She refused to let him see her cry.
"Say something," Kael pleaded.
"What exactly would you like me to say?"
"I never wanted this."
"I know."
"Then believe me."
"I do believe you."
She slowly turned to face him.
"But believing you doesn't erase what happened tonight."
"I chose you," Kael said desperately.
"Yes," she answered.
"And I still choose you."
"Do you?"
Her question hung heavily between them.
"When you looked at her... you forgot I was even standing beside you."
Kael lowered his head.
He had no answer.
"How strong is it?" Seraphina finally asked.
"The bond."
Kael remained silent for several seconds before speaking honestly.
"Stronger than anything I've ever experienced."
His words shattered the last piece of hope she had been clinging to.
She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to stop the trembling that spread through her body.
"So fate has finally come to claim you," she whispered.
"Seraphina, please give me time."
"Time?"
A bitter laugh escaped her lips.
"Time to decide whether the seven years we spent building this life together are worth more than a woman you met only minutes ago?"
"It's not that simple."
"Maybe not for you."
"But for me, everything changed the moment you let go of my hand."
Kael stepped toward her.
She instinctively stepped back.
"Don't," she said softly.
"Not tonight."
Outside, the full moon illuminated the palace grounds with cold silver light.
Inside, two hearts that had once beaten as one stood divided by a bond neither of them had asked for.
Neither Kael nor Seraphina realized that the Moon Goddess's cruel decision had only begun a journey that would change not only their lives, but the destiny of every pack across the kingdom.
