Kevin did not go home that night.
He sat in his car outside the hospital until sunrise.
Michelle's final words kept repeating in his head.
I survived the bomb, but what I felt for you didn't.
There was no anger in her voice when she said it.
That was what made it unbearable.
If she had screamed, he could have told himself she was emotional.
If she had insulted him, he could have blamed pain.
But Michelle had sounded certain.
Finished.
Kevin rested his forehead against the steering wheel.
For years, he had believed love would wait for him.
Michelle would wait.
Dinner could wait.
Anniversaries could wait.
Marriage could wait.
Everything could wait because Michelle loved him.
Now he finally understood that love was not the same thing as endless patience.
His phone vibrated.
Detective Cole.
"Dr. Woods?"
"Yes."
"We recovered several items from Michelle's apartment while processing evidence related to Mercer's surveillance."
"What kind of items?"
"Nothing criminal."
"Then why are you calling me?"
"Because one of them has your name on it."
Kevin sat upright.
"What is it?"
"A box."
"What box?"
"I think you should see it yourself."
An hour later, Kevin arrived at the police station.
Cole met him in an interview room carrying a plain cardboard storage box.
Michelle had written something across the top in black marker.
For Kevin.
Kevin stared at the handwriting.
"When did you find this?"
"Yesterday."
"Why didn't you give it to me then?"
"Because Michelle was still unstable, and technically this isn't yours unless she says it is."
"Did she?"
"Her mother confirmed Michelle had intended to give it to you."
Kevin slowly touched the lid.
"When?"
"No idea."
Cole stood.
"I'll give you some privacy."
The door closed.
Kevin opened the box.
The first thing inside was a photograph.
Michelle and Kevin at the beach three summers earlier.
Michelle was laughing at something outside the frame.
Kevin had one arm around her waist.
He remembered that day.
Or rather, he remembered leaving it early.
Violet had called because her car wouldn't start.
Kevin had driven two hours back to the city to help her.
Michelle stayed alone at the hotel until the next morning.
Kevin placed the photograph on the table.
Underneath it was another.
Michelle's birthday.
The year before.
The cake had Kevin's name written beside hers.
He wasn't in the picture.
He remembered why.
Violet's boyfriend had broken up with her.
She had called Kevin crying.
He spent the entire night at her apartment.
Michelle had told him it was fine.
She always said it was fine.
Kevin closed his eyes.
The next object was a restaurant reservation card.
Their anniversary.
Cancelled.
Then two theater tickets.
Unused.
Then a handwritten list.
Places to go with Kevin.
Paris.
The coast in winter.
A little mountain town Michelle had once shown him online.
A cooking class.
A weekend without phones.
Most of the items had small notes beside them.
Maybe next year.
When Kevin has time.
After work gets easier.
Kevin stared at the words until they blurred.
There was a journal at the bottom of the box.
He hesitated before touching it.
A folded note sat on top.
If you're reading this because I finally gave it to you, please don't be angry.
Kevin's hands began to shake.
He unfolded the rest.
I started writing because I kept forgetting what I wanted to say whenever we argued. You always sounded so certain, and I always ended up thinking maybe I was the problem.
Kevin stopped reading.
He pressed the note against his lips.
"God, Michelle."
He forced himself to continue.
I don't think Violet is evil. I don't even think you love her romantically. I just think there is a place in your life that belongs to her, and every time I try to stand beside you, I realize I'm standing outside it.
Kevin's eyes filled with tears.
I know you'll tell me she's family.
I know you'll tell me I'm jealous.
Maybe I am jealous.
But I don't want all of you.
I only want to know that sometimes, when both of us need you, you'll choose me.
Kevin lowered the paper.
He had spent years insisting that was unreasonable.
Now, alone in a police interview room, it sounded painfully simple.
He opened the journal.
The first entries were happy.
Michelle wrote about their first date.
Kevin ordering something too spicy because he wanted to impress her.
Their first movie night.
The first time he told her he loved her.
Then Violet began appearing in the pages.
Kevin left early tonight. Vi called.
I know she's his best friend. I feel guilty for being upset.
A few pages later.
Mom asked whether Kevin likes her cooking. I didn't know how to tell her he left before dessert again.
Another.
I waited at the restaurant for forty minutes. He forgot because Vi needed help moving furniture.
Then another.
I told him I felt like his second choice. He said I'm creating competition where none exists.
Maybe he's right.
Kevin stopped.
That sentence broke something inside him.
Maybe he's right.
How many times had Michelle doubted herself because he refused to question himself?
He turned more pages.
Today I almost ended it.
He called me controlling.
I cried in the bathroom at work.
Then he brought coffee the next morning and kissed my forehead like nothing happened.
I let it go.
I always let it go.
Kevin covered his face.
The journal continued.
Six months ago.
Michelle had written about marriage.
Kevin keeps saying someday.
I don't know what someday means anymore.
I found a jewelry store receipt in his coat pocket today.
For one second, I thought maybe he bought a ring.
Then I hated myself for getting excited.
Kevin's breath caught.
She had known.
Not everything.
But enough to hope.
The next entry was dated two weeks later.
He cancelled dinner again because Violet called.
If he did buy a ring, maybe he changed his mind.
I wish he'd just tell me.
Kevin stood suddenly and paced the room.
He couldn't sit still.
He had bought the ring.
He had planned to propose.
Twice.
The first time Violet called because her dog had gone missing.
The second time she had a fight with her mother.
Both times, Kevin had left Michelle waiting.
He had told himself he would reschedule.
He never did.
The final journal entry was from three days before the kidnapping.
Kevin and I argued tonight.
Vi called while we were eating.
I asked him not to go.
He looked at me like I had asked him to abandon someone dying.
I don't think I can do this forever.
I love him.
But loving him is starting to make me dislike myself.
Maybe that's how you know something has gone wrong.
Kevin couldn't read anymore.
He closed the journal.
His shoulders shook.
For the first time since Michelle was rescued, he cried without trying to stop.
Not because he might lose her.
Because he finally understood what she had already lost.
Years.
Confidence.
Birthdays.
Promises.
Small pieces of herself, surrendered one apology at a time.
A knock sounded at the door.
Cole entered quietly.
"You okay?"
Kevin laughed bitterly.
"No."
Cole glanced at the journal.
"I figured."
"She kept all of this."
"People keep things they don't know how to say."
Kevin wiped his face.
"I thought she complained too much."
"Looks like she didn't complain enough."
Kevin stared at the detective.
"You always this direct?"
"Occupational hazard."
Kevin looked down at the box.
"Can I take this?"
"Her mother said yes."
"Why?"
"She said maybe you should finally understand her."
Kevin carefully closed the box.
As he reached the door, Cole stopped him.
"There's another reason I asked you to come."
Kevin turned.
"Mercer's accomplice gave us access to one of their cloud accounts."
"Did you find Mercer?"
"Not yet."
"Then what?"
"Photographs."
Cole placed several printed images on the table.
Kevin stared at them.
The first showed Michelle leaving work.
The second showed Kevin entering Violet's apartment.
The third showed Michelle sitting alone at a restaurant.
The fourth showed Kevin and Violet outside a café.
"They were watching all of us," Kevin whispered.
"For weeks."
"Why photograph Violet?"
"That's what bothered me."
Cole placed one final picture on the table.
Violet stood beside Gavin Mercer outside a parking garage.
Kevin stopped breathing.
"No."
"Photo was taken twelve days before Michelle's kidnapping."
"That's impossible."
"Maybe."
"Violet doesn't know Mercer."
"Are you sure?"
Kevin stared at the image.
Violet's face was clear.
So was Mercer's.
They weren't accidentally passing each other.
They were talking.
Kevin's voice became almost inaudible.
"What the hell was she doing with him?"
