Mark couldn't sleep.
The photo album remained open on the bedside table, every page reminding him of the woman he had slowly pushed out of his life.
For years, he had convinced himself that everything he did for Sophie was justified.
He believed he was making up for Lily's supposed mistake.
But after seeing those photographs, something no longer felt right.
The next morning, he left for work earlier than usual.
Instead of driving to the office, he stopped outside the old police station.
He sat inside the car for several minutes before finally walking inside.
"Good morning," the receptionist greeted.
"How can I help you?"
"I'd like to review an old case," Mark replied.
"It's from about ten years ago."
"The Sophie Carter assault investigation."
The receptionist typed several details into the computer before shaking her head.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"That case has recently been reopened."
"Only authorized personnel can access the files now."
"Reopened?"
"Yes."
"New evidence was submitted earlier this week."
Mark froze.
New evidence?
Who had reopened the case?
Deep down, he already knew the answer.
Lily.
Meanwhile, Lily and Emma Collins met with Detective Ryan Foster, the officer assigned to review the old investigation.
The detective carefully listened as Daniel Cross repeated his testimony.
"You're certain about what you saw?" Ryan asked.
"Absolutely," Daniel answered.
"She wasn't being chased."
"She stayed there willingly."
"Then a man arrived."
"They argued before I walked away."
"Why didn't you tell the police this back then?"
"I did."
"Someone even recorded my statement."
"But later they claimed there wasn't enough evidence."
Ryan frowned while taking notes.
"We'll verify everything."
"If your original testimony disappeared, someone intentionally removed it."
Lily exchanged a glance with Emma.
The investigation was finally moving in the right direction.
"Detective," Lily asked softly.
"Do you really think the truth can still come out after ten years?"
Ryan closed his notebook.
"Truth doesn't disappear because time passes."
"Sometimes it simply waits for someone brave enough to uncover it."
Those words stayed with Lily long after the meeting ended.
Across town, Sophie sat comfortably inside the Lennon residence while helping Anthony complete a school project.
"That looks great," she praised.
"You'll definitely get first place."
"Thanks, Aunt Sophie."
"Mom never helped me like this."
Sophie's smile remained gentle.
"Your mother was probably just busy."
"Don't blame her."
Although her words sounded kind, they planted another quiet seed of resentment inside Anthony.
Just then, the front door opened.
Mark walked in.
"You're home early," Sophie said cheerfully.
"The meeting ended sooner than expected," he replied.
He watched Sophie laughing with Anthony.
Only a week ago, the scene would've warmed his heart.
Today...
Something felt strangely artificial.
"Anthony," Mark said.
"Go upstairs for a moment."
"I need to speak with Aunt Sophie."
The boy nodded before leaving.
As soon as he disappeared, Mark spoke quietly.
"The police reopened your case."
Sophie's smile vanished.
"What?"
"Apparently new evidence surfaced."
"Did... did Lily do this?"
"Probably."
For the first time in years, genuine panic flashed across Sophie's face.
"Mark..."
"You don't actually believe her, do you?"
"I'm not saying that."
"I'm simply saying the police are investigating again."
"Then stop them!"
The words escaped before Sophie realized what she'd said.
Mark frowned.
"Stop them?"
"I mean..."
She forced an awkward laugh.
"Why dig up painful memories?"
"Everyone has already moved on."
"Have they?"
Mark asked quietly.
"Because Lily clearly hasn't."
Sophie quickly lowered her head.
"She hates me."
"That's why she's doing this."
"She's trying to ruin my life."
Mark remained silent.
Normally he would've comforted her immediately.
Today, however...
He remembered Daniel Cross's missing statement.
He remembered the reopened investigation.
Most of all...
He remembered Lily's exhausted eyes as she handed him the divorce papers.
For the first time, he wasn't completely certain who deserved his sympathy.
Later that evening, Anthony overheard his father talking on the phone.
"Yes," Mark said.
"The detective wants another interview."
"Apparently they found inconsistencies."
Anthony frowned.
Inconsistencies?
He quietly returned to his bedroom, confused.
If Aunt Sophie had always told the truth...
Why would the police investigate again?
Meanwhile, Lily spent the evening sorting through old storage boxes she had taken from the hotel.
Inside one worn envelope, she discovered dozens of letters she had written to Anthony over the years.
Letters she had never given him.
One was written after his first day of kindergarten.
Another after his first bicycle accident.
Another after his eighth birthday.
Each letter expressed the same hope.
That one day her son would understand how deeply she loved him.
Tears welled in her eyes.
"Maybe someday," she whispered.
"But not today."
She carefully placed the letters back into the envelope.
Some wounds needed time.
Others needed truth.
The next morning, Detective Ryan called Emma.
"We've confirmed something interesting," he said.
"The surveillance cameras weren't actually broken that night."
"What?" Emma asked.
"The recordings existed."
"But someone requested they be destroyed before the investigation concluded."
"Who authorized that?"
"That's exactly what we're trying to find out."
Emma immediately contacted Lily.
"This is bigger than we expected."
"Someone actively buried evidence."
Lily sat speechless.
For ten years she had blamed fate.
Faulty cameras.
Bad luck.
Missing proof.
Now she learned the evidence hadn't disappeared by accident.
Someone had wanted the truth hidden.
Across the city, Sophie stood alone on her apartment balcony.
Her hands trembled around her phone.
She dialed an unfamiliar number.
"It's me," she whispered.
"The police reopened everything."
"If they find out what really happened..."
The person on the other end interrupted her.
Sophie's face turned pale.
"No," she replied nervously.
"I won't let that happen."
She ended the call before leaning heavily against the railing.
For the first time in ten years...
The carefully constructed lie that had given her everything was beginning to collapse.
And no matter how desperately she tried to hold it together...
The truth was finally finding its way into the light.
