Liam's POV
I spent the rest of the night at the police station.
The flash drive was being examined by investigators, and Daniel had been rushed into surgery.
I sat alone in the waiting area, staring at the floor.
For the first time since Andy died, I didn't feel completely helpless.
There was evidence now.
Real evidence.
But I still couldn't stop thinking about one thing.
Gwen had left with Pierce.
If they were together, there was a chance they were planning to destroy whatever evidence remained.
My lawyer arrived just before dawn.
"Liam, the investigators found something on the drive."
I looked up.
"What?"
"A series of messages between Gwen and Pierce from the day before the accident."
He handed me a printed transcript.
I read the first message.
"Tomorrow is the only opportunity. After that, Liam may notice something is wrong."
My hands went cold.
The next message was from Pierce.
"And the child?"
Gwen had replied:
"I'll handle him. Liam won't interfere if he's kept away from the operating room."
I couldn't breathe.
My lawyer placed another page in front of me.
"There's more."
I looked down.
Pierce had written:
"Once the blood is secured, everything goes back to normal. You can finally leave Liam."
My jaw tightened.
So that was their plan.
Use Andy's blood to save Pierce, then walk away from me as if our marriage and our son meant nothing.
I folded the pages slowly.
"Where are Gwen and Pierce?"
"Police are searching for them."
"They won't get far."
...
Third-Person POV
Gwen sat in the passenger seat of Pierce's car, staring blankly through the windshield.
"Where are we going?" she asked.
Pierce didn't answer.
"Pierce, where are we going?"
"Somewhere safe."
"I don't want to run."
He glanced at her.
"You think they'll forgive us?"
Gwen's face went pale.
"I didn't kill Andy."
"Neither did I."
"Then why are we running?"
Pierce gripped the steering wheel tighter.
He had no answer.
Gwen looked at him for several seconds.
"You knew."
Pierce's eyes stayed on the road.
"Knew what?"
"You knew the accident could kill him."
Silence filled the car.
"You told me it would be controlled," Gwen whispered. "You told me the driver would stop."
"I said I didn't expect this."
"But you knew!"
Her voice cracked.
"You knew there was a possibility my son could die."
Pierce finally looked at her.
"And you still agreed."
Gwen froze.
Those words hit harder than anything the police had said.
She remembered every conversation.
Every signature.
Every time she'd convinced herself that Andy would be fine.
Every time she'd chosen Pierce.
And suddenly, there was no excuse left.
"Turn the car around," she whispered.
"No."
"Turn it around!"
"It's too late."
Gwen began crying.
"I need to see my son."
Pierce's expression hardened.
"He's dead, Gwen."
"I know!" she screamed.
"And that's because of us!"
The car fell silent.
Neither of them noticed the police vehicle approaching from behind.
A siren suddenly pierced the air.
Pierce looked into the rearview mirror.
His face changed.
"They're here."
He accelerated.
Gwen grabbed the dashboard.
"Stop!"
"If we stop, we're finished."
"We already are!"
The pursuit continued for several miles before Pierce finally lost control and slammed into a roadside barrier.
The airbags deployed.
Gwen screamed.
Police surrounded the vehicle within seconds.
Pierce was pulled from the driver's seat and handcuffed.
Gwen didn't resist.
She simply sat there crying.
As an officer opened her door, she whispered one sentence.
"I want to see Andy."
The officer looked at her sadly.
"You should have gone to him when he was still alive."
Gwen lowered her head.
For the first time, she had nothing to say.
...
Liam's POV
When I heard they'd been arrested, I didn't feel victorious.
I felt empty.
My son was still dead.
No arrest could change that.
No lawsuit could bring him back.
But when the investigator walked over and handed me another file, my hands tightened around it.
"There's one final piece of evidence," he said.
"It came from Pierce's phone."
I opened the file.
There was a photograph taken two days before Andy's accident.
It showed Pierce standing beside Gwen.
Between them was a medical consent form.
At the bottom was Gwen's signature.
And beside it was a second signature I didn't recognize.
The investigator pointed to the name.
"This person authorized the entire arrangement."
I stared at the signature.
Then my blood ran cold.
I knew that name.
It belonged to the director of the hospital where Andy had died.
