The moon hung high above Blackridge Manor, bathing the ancient estate in pale silver light. Music drifted through the gardens while laughter echoed between the towering oak trees. Tonight was meant to be a celebration, a rare evening where the world's most powerful supernatural families gathered under one roof.
Evelyn Harper stood on the balcony overlooking the celebration, gently resting a hand on her swollen stomach. A soft breeze carried the scent of roses and burning charcoal from the barbecue below. It should have been a perfect night.
"You're hiding again," a familiar voice teased behind her.
She turned to find Thaddeus leaning against the doorway, dressed entirely in black. His silver eyes glowed faintly beneath the lights, giving him an almost unreal appearance.
"I'm not hiding," Evelyn replied with a smile. "I'm just enjoying the peace while it lasts."
"Peace never stays around us for long."
He crossed the room until he stood beside her. Without saying another word, he wrapped an arm around her waist, careful of her pregnancy.
"How's our little troublemaker?" he asked.
"Kicking every five minutes," she laughed. "I think he's inherited your attitude."
"Impossible."
"Really?"
"I'm perfectly well behaved."
Evelyn rolled her eyes.
"Tell that to the kingdoms you've terrified."
A rare grin appeared on his face.
Only she could make the feared Dark King smile.
Down in the garden, their daughter Lily chased glowing fairy lights while laughing uncontrollably. Orion sat nearby pretending not to smile as she repeatedly climbed into his lap.
"Again!" Lily demanded.
"You're becoming far too spoiled," Orion sighed dramatically before lifting her into the air once more.
Nearby, Ryland expertly handled the barbecue while arguing with the chef over whose steaks tasted better.
"Mine are obviously superior," Ryland declared.
"Only because you threatened the cows," Orion shouted back.
"They respected me."
"They feared you."
"Same difference."
Everyone burst into laughter.
Evelyn watched the scene with warmth filling her heart.
For years, she'd dreamed of a family like this.
One built not by fate alone, but by love.
"They're happy," she whispered.
"Because you're here," Thaddeus answered quietly.
"You changed all of us."
Before she could reply, Lily came running toward them.
"Mama! Papa! Come cut the cake!"
"Already?"
"Uncle Ryland keeps eating the frosting!"
"Lies!" Ryland yelled from across the lawn.
"There are witnesses," Orion replied calmly.
"Traitor."
Still laughing, Evelyn followed Lily into the garden.
The enormous birthday cake stood in the center of the decorated lawn.
Everyone gathered around while cameras flashed.
"Speech!" someone shouted.
Ryland groaned.
"Not again."
"You're giving one," Orion smirked.
"Absolutely not."
Thaddeus stepped forward instead.
The crowd immediately became silent.
"Most of you know me as a king," he began.
"Some know me as a monster."
"They're not entirely wrong."
Several guests chuckled nervously.
"But before titles and power, I'm simply a father."
He looked toward Lily.
"Everything I fight for stands beside me tonight."
His gaze shifted toward Evelyn.
"And everything worth protecting begins with them."
Applause filled the garden.
Evelyn felt tears threatening to escape.
Even after everything they'd survived together, hearing those words still made her heart race.
The candles were lit.
"Make a wish," Orion told Lily.
The little girl squeezed her eyes shut.
"I wish we're always together," she whispered before blowing out every candle.
Cheers erupted around the garden.
Nobody noticed the figure standing beyond the tree line.
Hidden in darkness.
Watching.
Waiting.
Cold eyes observed every movement through a pair of binoculars.
"She's exactly where you predicted," a distorted voice spoke through an earpiece.
"Good," another voice answered.
"Proceed."
The stranger reached into a backpack and activated a small electronic device.
A blinking red light appeared.
"Target locked."
Back in the garden, Evelyn suddenly paused.
"Did you hear that?" she asked.
"Hear what?" Ryland replied.
"I thought I heard..."
She frowned.
A faint clicking noise echoed somewhere beneath the patio.
Thaddeus instantly became alert.
"Everyone step back," he ordered.
"Now."
His tone changed so suddenly that nobody questioned him.
Guests quickly moved away from the table.
Thaddeus knelt beside the wooden deck.
His expression darkened.
"Bomb," he whispered.
"Run!"
Everything happened in seconds.
Thaddeus threw himself toward Evelyn.
Ryland grabbed Lily.
Orion tackled several nearby guests.
Then the world exploded.
A deafening blast shattered the peaceful night.
Fire consumed the garden.
The shockwave hurled everyone through the air.
Glass rained from the mansion windows.
Smoke swallowed everything.
Evelyn hit the ground hard, her ears ringing violently.
She struggled to breathe.
"Thaddeus!" she screamed.
No answer.
"Ryland! Orion!"
Only flames replied.
Through the thick smoke she could barely make out silhouettes moving between the burning debris.
Then she heard it.
Lily crying.
"Mama!"
Evelyn forced herself to stand despite the pain shooting through her body.
Ignoring the fire around her, she stumbled toward her daughter's voice.
Somewhere beyond the flames, an unfamiliar man smiled while watching the chaos unfold.
"This," he whispered, "is only the beginning."
