The next morning, I went to the place Wes had given me.
It was an old office building on the edge of the city.
Cole wanted to come with me, but I stopped him at the entrance.
"I'll go in alone."
He looked at me for a long moment.
"Are you sure?"
"For the first time in six years, I'm sure of myself."
I walked inside with the original records in my bag.
Richard was waiting on the top floor.
He stood beside the window with his hands behind his back.
"You look just like your father," he said.
"And you look exactly like the man who destroyed him."
His smile disappeared.
"Give me the records."
"No."
"You don't understand what you're dealing with."
"I understand perfectly."
I placed my phone on the table.
The recording was already running.
"Tell me what happened to my father."
Richard stared at me.
"He refused to cooperate."
"So you framed him."
"He was going to expose everything."
"And then you killed him."
Richard's expression hardened.
"Your father made his choice."
My hands trembled, but I didn't look away.
"You just admitted it."
Richard suddenly realized what I had done.
He lunged toward the phone.
The door burst open.
The detective and several officers rushed inside.
Richard was arrested before he could reach me.
For the first time in eight years, someone finally believed my father.
Outside the building, Cole was waiting.
He didn't try to hug me.
He simply stood there and waited for me to decide whether I wanted him near me.
I walked toward him.
"It's over," I said.
He nodded.
"Richard has been arrested. Your father's case will be reopened, and my father's involvement is being investigated too."
I looked at him quietly.
"You know what hurt the most?"
"What?"
"Not Elise. Not the fake breakup. Not even the lies."
Cole lowered his eyes.
"It was that you decided what I was allowed to know."
"I know."
"You loved me, but you didn't trust me."
His eyes reddened.
"You're right."
I took a slow breath.
"I don't know if I can ever love you the way I did before."
He nodded.
"I understand."
There was no argument.
No desperate promise.
No attempt to make me feel guilty.
For once, Cole accepted my decision.
Two weeks later, I moved to Lakeside.
My father's name was officially cleared after the investigation uncovered the forged records and financial fraud.
Richard faced multiple criminal charges.
Cole's father also became part of the investigation for helping conceal the truth.
Elise testified against Richard and admitted everything she had done.
She apologized to me before I left.
I accepted her apology, but I didn't ask her to stay in my life.
Some wounds could heal without becoming friendships again.
As for Cole, we didn't speak for several months.
Then one evening, I received a message from him.
"I hope Lakeside is treating you well."
I smiled faintly.
"It is."
He replied after several minutes.
"I'm glad."
That was all.
There was no promise to get back together.
No request for another chance.
And somehow, that was exactly what I needed.
A year later, I stood outside my new office overlooking the lake.
I had built a life that belonged entirely to me.
No fake relationship.
No pretending.
No waiting for someone to choose me.
I thought about the woman who had once stood outside a private room holding a handmade birthday cake, believing she wasn't enough.
I almost didn't recognize her anymore.
Cole had once told everyone that I couldn't leave him.
He had been wrong.
I had left.
And leaving had been the beginning of everything.
I didn't regret the six years we spent together.
They taught me how deeply I could love.
But they also taught me something more important.
Love should never require you to disappear.
I looked at the lake and smiled.
"Thank you for the breakup, Cole."
Because the day he let me go was the day I finally chose myself.
